At work today and the weather was great outside. Warmest it's been all season.
The company I work at is in a tower right downtown. Lunchtime had all of the street vendors out in full force.
So I'm out there with food I got from one of the trucks, eating outside and enjoying the weather.
A homeless guy comes up and asks if I could spare some money for him.
I rarely will turn a homeless person away. But to the same extent, I understand the value of personal dignity and earning your money.
So a couple of minutes into having the guy do jumping jacks while singing the National Anthem some bossy lady who had no business sticking her nose into my entertainment comes up to ME and says "you're despicable!".
I stand up, toss a few bucks on the ground at the guy's feet, and get right back in her face "oh yeah? Where is the money YOU gave him?".
She says, "you're unbelievable! You have him doing the jumping jacks while singing... while you sit there like an a-hole laughing!"
To which I remind her, "he's getting good money for doing this. It's giving him a sense of self-worth... and all you can do is find something to complain about."
Oddly enough her antics embolden some other people to start chiming in.
Next thing you know there's 4 hens clucking at me about how I'm some jerk.
Well, as luck would have it it's right AT THAT TIME that another homeless dude, who I said I would give a few bucks to if he ran down to the next block to the convenience store and get me some orange juice, comes trotting up with my orange juice.
I look at him and say "guy, you couldn't have come back at a worse time." Uncomfortably I toss a few bucks at him.
As you can imagine it just further kindled their fury at me.
Anyway.... it's weird how you try to help people and all it does is piss others off.
