Skyrim Special Edition

Short story. One of my friend has Skyrim on PS3. I saw it in his home but I didn't even know he was a player. So I casualy bring it up 2 weeks ago. He tells me he's playing a thief/archer and just killed his first Dragon. He's been playing sporadically for years I believe.

So he sets the game up and shows me his handy work. Nice simple character, effective Bosmer elf, unusual for a beginner but fun. Remember, my friend is a musician so gaming is a very loose hobby.

I stop him mid-battle (I sent him to Halted Stream Camp to pick up transmute and start the crafting fun). Just before entering the cave I stop him and say "gimme that". He was constantly pausing the game. Every 3 seconds. I pick up the controller: I haven't touched one of those in years but I'm good.

So I enter the cave, sneak snipe the guard. Keep in mind, I was asking my friend how to sneak (I don't remember how on PS3) so he didn't expect that. I set up my things then and there, in 1 minute. I open the door, sneak into the main room and sneak snipe the fire trap over the boss. No pause yet. I snipe the other traps to make sure to set everyone on fire. I open FAV to switch back to dual daggers. I open the menu to eat a couple of meals (I showed him how to cook in Whiterun earlier). I also down a couple of potions, fortify one-handed, resist fire and such. Go!

The game was on adept so no biggie. But I swept the room in one-shot after that. No pause, no menu, no interruptions. Bing, bang, boom, he was having fun watching me run, jump and flank ennemies. Dispatch them and keep fighting even if my health is getting critical. Using the hidden traps to finish the annoying boss. I literally impaled the boss with the trap, my friend was speechless. Of course, I cleaned up that cave a thousand times before!

He understood then and there how Skyrim was meant to be enjoyed. With the least interruptions possible.

^nice story.
I'm playing a mage character on XB1 and I have to pause all the goddamn time. :(

It's actually getting tough to play as. I'm level 37 and spells like fireball barely put a dent in opponents with heavy armor anymore. I'm starting to craft a heavy armor set with dual enchantments, so I'll see if that helps keep me alive a little longer.

All I can say...is Zeus bless the 1-9 buttons for quick equip on the PC.

I really hope that the SKSE comes soon enough. There was some talk that they aim it for the release in March 2017. I havent touched the special edition yet, just patiently waiting for SKSE and some mods that it will bring. God knows that I wont play bethesda games without modding them... Well, I have modded this up quite a bit already but there are some mods that will require the upcoming SKSE. I just hope that it wont take longer than to the March

That's guru stuff man. I consider myself a Skyrim expert but that's guru stuff. Skyrim is a hobby in which I like to invest but damn that sounds deep. Also awesome! I heard the acronym and know a little but modding is too far for me! I play to forget about computer work I hate (multitrack musical edition can be a pain, I swear). So I don't want to meddle too much, I just wanna play.

Thanks for your input and feel free to tell us more about SKSE, I'm still green with the details...

At that point (37!), your character should be versatile. There are always alternate ways to hurt an enemy. If Fireball only dents him, combine things. Build your character and choose your perks wisely. For example, a Fireball launched from sneak position, when your perks are maxed for sneak damage and fire damage, can kill in one shot. If you throw Fireballs blindly, the spell is weak. If you summon a Fire Elemental to keep the enemy occupied (and burning), Fireball suddenly becomes great because your minion is immune.

Combine, think, explore. Use prep time!

Yes. I always prefer Fav but quick equip is a blessing console players must dream about. I'm sure there's a way to quick equip on console, maybe a PS/X-box player can confirm?

I rarely post Camel stuff because he's very thorough and nerdy. He's the nerds reference on Skyrim gameplay and unique items. I watch when I have time but he always upload 15+ minutes videos! Here's an example of his work, if you like Unique / Rare weapons:

Sorry for bad quality, this is him dispatching enemies with kitchen knife and fork:

I dont.... I dont know if you are serious or not :D It feels like you are being sarcastic, but on the other hand your text looks sincere. So I am bit confused here

Anyways, if you really were curious, SKSE is a script extender, a tool which is needed for some mods. Bethesda games are notorious for the fact that they have amazing mods and modding community. Anything from new weapons to better graphics, from huge mods with brand new quests and voice acting and memorable characters to small mods that just make a single gameplay change. It has been released for the original PC version of Skyrim for a long time but the new Special Edition doesnt have it yet

For me, Bethesda games are definitely games that I think have potential but I just dont really enjoy them "vanilla", without mods. I feel like they have tons of bugs, some boring quests (hence for my interest in new quest mods), pretty bad textures and just some awful choices with the gameplay or game itself. Now dont get me wrong, game itself is decent and the world somewhat interesting. And tons of players are enjoying it every day, so they have created some good stuff, thats for sure. But its not enough for me once I started using mods back in Oblivion in 2009 or so

Maybe I used a wrong word there though. "Modding". I only download the mods and manually install them. I dont know shit about making mods myself, nor do I know how to edit them. You can easily download and install them with nexus mod manager these days, without having to manually place the files. Its actually quite simple. I have my own reasons for manual installs though, but lets not get into that

But I believe that game can be so much more when you have the right mods for it. And thats the things, there are so many mods. One can just pick the ones that they want. Want some cool new weapons? Alright, there's tons of mod for that. Better graphics? That's an easy one. Want new quests or even a huge fanmade expansion / DLC which has huge amount of content, professional level voice acting, whole new area and many quests? That can be arranged. Is it bugging you that people act stupid (normal villagers suddenly have courage to fight dragons of legends?). Dont like how your experience is playing as a vampire or werewolf? Dont like how dragons dont have enough variety and arent deadly enough? All that can be changed with mods. And that is why I like them. They can improve so much.

Level 100 post. Thank you!

I was not being sarcastic, I can assure you. I am NOT a professional gamer, at all. Not even a gamer, per se. I play Skyrim on a 4 years old machine and I enjoy minimal settings. My video card is older than most Sherdog accounts. My computer is my working tool and I don't need a strong graphic card for what I do. All my money goes into musical instruments, audio gear, guitar pedals and such. All my technical knowledge go into music too, I must admit.

I'm into gameplay. That's it, that's all. A gamer would be sick if he saw me play: old 20" monitor, low settings, no anti alifuckthehellisthat. I'm all about role-play baby! Why do you think I post Fudgemuppet videos? These guys are all about gameplay too. They have top-of-the-line machines but they never talk about that: they create unique character builds with storylines meant to be game-played.

That being said, I use every mods I can use. I just limit myself because I can't be bothered to mess with load order or conflicts of whatever. Go look at the last Fallout 4 thread: I ran it until the game went awol but I never ever talked about machine, settings or graphics. It's all about gameplay. That's what I do in my leisure time. When I'm not working on the same computer, mixing and recording stuff.

I like what you bring to the thread, I want to know more. I just can't help on that particular subject and that's why I welcome your look on things. Thanks for the long post, I will explore when I'm not jumping to another tab to watch the UFC!

Happy Holidays!

I'll be honest too. I mentioned it earlier but maybe it's hidden in a ton of text. ;) When I tried Skyrim Special Edition, I immediately saw I could not play on ultra settings. I knew it already! I could see the graphics but I had fps drops and various lags and glitches. Of course. I started this thread so I decided to keep up playing Special Edition to be sure not to mislead people. But I have to play on minimal settings to be perfect, medium to be safe. No higher.

I enjoy it anyway. I was never about "cartoon Skyrim" and old environmental mods bothered me. I like it the SE way. It's smooth to the eye, even on medium. My mods are now all focused on gameplay. I pick something I want to game-play or I add story line elements. No graphic enhancements.

I still have my Vanilla Skyrim installed and ready to run in a second, it looks great! When I started playing Vanilla Skyrim, my machine was top of the line. I play on the same machine today and it will be the same machine in 2017 too... Very few modifs, I hate meddling with that.

Heh, no problem man :D I just thought you were sarcastic with the "Thanks for your input" message since I really dont think I added anything to the thread, I was just cursing that SKSE wasnt here yet and I am bit frustrated if it will go further than the planned March 2017 release

But man, its all cool, every player is different. And thats also a cool thing about RPG's, its about building your own experience. One doesnt need good graphics for that. Choose your own adventure and playstyle. Thats the great thing about some RPG's, many styles to play. And graphics definitely isnt all that matter. Hell, I still like some older games as well. It doesnt matter if they have "old" graphics, hell, some games are even suited for them.

With some older computers I think its better not to get involved with the mods either. The graphics dont matter that much, but one thing that bothers me no matter what the game is, is the lag. If the performance is bad, the fps is low and the game in the screen is far from smooth, the opposite in fact. Some mods can and definitely will need more from one's PC than some other mods. Hell, I have a quite a new PC, but there are mods out there that would make my computer beg for mercy. But there's no need for those. I like good graphics and especially good texture works, but thats just my own preference. I still think Skyrim has a beautiful art work and design and thats always nice to see in the game. Night sky looks brilliant at the times.

Too many mods can definitely create problems, and so can certain mods if used together. Some mods offer compability patches but not all of them. I have screwed up many Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas and Oblivion games back in the day with using wrong mods and having a wrong load order. I literally spent hours and hours at night to download and sort the mods. Sometimes I got them to work and sometimes I destroyed the game and only thing I could do is to remove the game and the mods and reinstall it again

One thing though that bothers me personally is the bad UI. UI mod for Skyrim (the original one) was one of those "must have" mods for me before I started playing, but thats the thing, it requires the already mentioned SKSE and Special Edition just doesnt have it yet

But its all good. I got so many games and much free time to do other things or play other games. I will play Skyrim SE once the time comes ;)

Happy holidays to you (and to others) too

"Oh shit that arrow did not kill it!" starts slamming the 1 key to get sword out.

That's the "2" key for us archer thiefs who prioritize the bow over all else... panick ensues only if i run out of stamina for my slow mode...

Why not use the slow time shout then? It will allow you to reset and let your stamina recover. Of course, there are better shouts but if you have one available at a time like this, use Slow Time instead of Fus or Feim. it's worth it in that particular situation!

Honestly I am addicted to using the night eye ability. I rarely use any of my shouts... :/

I rarely use any of my shouts... :/

Me either. It's funny, even though the game is practically based around killing dragons and obtaining new shouts, I always forget about them in combat. I usually have to die a couple times, before I remember that I have an entire set of powerful attacks I haven't been using for the past 20 hours or so.

Thats just it. Why is it only one Hotkey for powers? I can't use night eye without swapping it back n forth with a shout. Really annoying...

I think it was meant this way to force player to focus on one "magic" attack at a time. Most race powers take a whole day to replenish so it's not that big a deal. The "nigh eye" situation is particular but do you really need night eye?

I mean, caves can get very dark but rarely to the point of needing infravision. To be honest, I reached lvl 55 with my Kajiit Wrestler and I don't think I've used night eye once. If you have a follower with you, don't forget that you can give him/her a torch. He will equip it when it's dark but only outside of combat. He will switch back to weapon if ambushed, then take the torch out again when it's over.

I would say that's one of the main reason why I always have a follower with me.

What items should I be picking up?

Should I pick up the fruits and vegetables laying around or on the fields?

Do I pick up the plants?

Also, are books useless or do you get something every time you click on them? Do you have go through all the pages to get credit? I know some books give you map locations, etc.. but what about the other ones?

Damn you come from far, far away.

Pick up the less things possible: you have a carryweight limit so prioritize. You can boost your limit by boosting stamina when you level up. I would rather prioritize Health, a big carryweight limit is useless when dead. Go by weight when you prioritize. 1 gold / pound is the minimal limit but I put it way higher than that. I love Skyrim with the less interruptions possible, I manage next to nothing.

Fruits and Vegetable are not useful at lower difficulties. Don't mess with cooking and don't pick up food. Plants are different: they weight next to nothing and are useful in Alchemy. I would pick them up but they prolong your adventure if you go out of your way to do so. Only pick up plants when they enter your "personal bubble".

Books ARE useless once you have read them. Some give a free perk, others do nothings. Reading them is for you own pleasure only: you will learn Tamriel lore, nothing else. Pick them up only if you feel like reading. No need to carry them with you: they're rarely worth a penny. Pick them up if you want but drop them right then and there if you get overburdened.

If you follow the main story, you should reach Whiterun soon enough. If you talk to the Steward (attaché to the Yarl), he will sell you a house for 5000 gold. Once you buy it, you can breathe at last. There is a "safe" chest inside that house (Breezehome). You can store anything in there and it will remain.

Chests elsewhere are not safe: they will keep your items 2-3 days but after that, you won't find them anymore. Remember to sell valuables you don't need to spare room and make money. Money weights nothing, it's always better to sell a 30 pound armor for 60 gold than carrying it for nothing.

Remember to have fun and don't turn the game into a boring management task. It's really frustrating to open the inventory every 5 minutes to drop dead weigh. When you do that, Skyrim is not fun anymore...
