Interesting thing happened over the weekend:
I was playing the Companions story line and got to the point where I turned into a werewolf. I woke up outside that base and had to finish clearing out a Silver Hand base to complete the quest line I was on. I finish the quest, do a couple of other things, then and go back to my homestead to pick up Lydia. A courier comes up to me with a notice about an inheritance. I read it and apparently Adrienne (the Whiterun black smith) died. I figure some vampires must have spawned when I turned into a werewolf or something. I thought about going back and trying to save her, but my last hard save before that would have set be back several hours. I said fuck it, she's gone now, so I've decided to do the Dawnguard quest to avenge her.
On a sad note, if you go to her husband and ask who makes the weapons or armor, he sounds pretty sad. He's trading with Kahjit for now. He tried smithing on his own, but could never get it right. It's a great little detail the developers put in there.

Adrienne is my favorite blacksmith. It's a damn shame my house in Whiterun is so small and inadequate or else I'd only goto Whiterun to do all my business (selling and unloading all my gear). if I found out she died, I'd probably find an old save point to save her.

I thought about it. If I hadn't blown all my quicksaves on the quest I was on when she died, it wouldn't have been an issue. That's ok, it just adds some weight to the storyline.
FWIW, she bequeathed me 100 gold upon her death lol.

you will get more of those inheritance notes as you play. I haven't lost anyone "important" (to me anyway) yet but it could happen. Losing Adrienne would probably be the worst...

Want an even funnier detail? If you kill Adrienne yourself but pay the fine / spend time in prison, her sad husband will be mad. So mad, he will hire thugs to find and kill you.

If you dispatch them, you'll find the contract with his name as sponsor!

God i love this game, each night i spend a few hours exploring there is always stuff to do. I ended finding that Elder Scroll Dragon! man what a mission. The Blackreach was crazy. I just started more of the Thieves guild stuff actually and loving it. Do they always have side missions does it ever end?

My favorite armor in the game comes from the Thieves Guild quest-line!

Is it Light Armor though? I'm going all Heavy Beast mode, thankfully ihave Boots with extra carrying capacity. I still have the shitty Balrog Mace though. Why is their such a lack of nice swords in this game? Or am i not finding them for some reason. Or do you have to make your own? In Fallout i never built stuff always found legendary stuff.

Yeah unfortunately, i still have it since i got my light armor really high but I'm switching over to heavy armor myself for the time being to switch things up a little.

There are two different sets of missions. First, he "guild questline missions", where you must attack a manor and find out who's been double-crossing the guild. Those are normal quests with an end result.

The second set are the "former glory" quests, where Delvin and Saphire send you to fetch. Those are endless but have different results: finish 5 missions in a city and you'll get a special mission, which unlocks a new merchant in the Red Flaggon. Finish 5 missions in every city where they send you and the "former glory" quest are considered over.

You can still go on fetch missions after that, if I remember correctly.

Yeah I remember in my original 360 playthrough the Gray Mane companion who runs Sky Forge died and I never figured out how or I would have gone back to save him. Was really sad seeing it empty.

Do you guys bring a follower?

I don't since I don't want them to die and I don't want them stealing xp by killing something I could've gained xp from.

I bought a house in Whiterun. It's all dirty and shit. How do I upgrade it?

Also, I wanted to adopt an orphan, but it says I don't have a spare room.

I had Eorland Gray-Mane somehow die in my game. Went back though may saves and could not find him alive. Console commands to the rescue!

You can upgrade the house by talking to the Steward, same guy you bought it from. For Breezehome you can buy a children room, that allows you to adopt. I sometimes bring followers, but there is always a chance they will die. Most followers will fall down injured and then be ignored by the enemies so not to die. That being said I normally don't bring followers, and if I do I tell them to wait outside caves and the like.

I bring a follower, but I'm a squishy mage type. My usual MO is to conjure a Storm or Dremora meat sheild and let that and Mjoll do the tanking while I shoot arrows or fireballs from distance.

Why do you guys put so much value on NPC lives? Skyrim is huge and there are dozens of replacements for every profession imaginable. Follower or merchant, there's another one much alike in the next hold! I guess I'm the one who spent so much time playing that I have no more emotional ties. One of my biggest joy is to let a follower die so I can "Dead Thrall" him and make him a much quieter, less annoying follower. I like Lydia's tone when she mumbles "Aaaaarrrrrrghhhhh".

Skyrim XP doesn't work that way at all. You are rewarded for using skills, enemy death don't give points of experience: you get the XP by using spells or attacks to kill it! Even if your follower kills the enemy, you still get the XP for shooting him from afar or throwing fireballs. Or better yet, you can do both!

That's why it's best to create a versatile character able to use magic as much as melee attack and bows / arrows. You let your follower lead the attack, you summon a minion then throw spells / arrows at your foe. Wait until he's badly hurt and sneak your way nearby while your follower is grabbing his attention. Flank the enemy and attack from behind, you're much safer there!

With luck, you'll finish him in one shot and trigger an awesome kill animation:

Have fun!
