Six Good Movies with Shockingly Low Rotten Tomatoes Scores

That's too bad, RoboCop was actually good. And they did subtext much better in that movie than Starship Troopers ever dreamed of.

I thought the subtext was obvious and worked on two levels.
It was both parody of "rah-rah" war films, and a parody of propaganda movies.
But the grand joke of the movie is that the bugs and humans or sorta analogous. The humans think they're fighting for "freedom", but in fighting the bugs they're becoming less free and more of a hive mind.

Great movie. And the CGI, shockingly, still holds up.

On topic:
LAST DRAGON 33% Rotten
BLOODSPORT 33% Rotten

Both classics imo.

I must admit, I agree with the "Spaceballs" rating. I know it's classic and all, but I really don't think its' comedy style or gags have aged particularly well. I see it on TV all the time, and I'm either bored, or cringing at its lame jokes.

Sounds like you liked it quite a bit when you first saw it but now, after many years, the same jokes aren't as funny. Does that mean it was lame or unfunny at the time? You really sound exceptionally pretentious with this comment and then previously about Boondock Saints being "derivative."

I think you should change your name and av to Ango Gobloggian :

Sorry dude but MK is NOT a good movie. I think the fact that it's even up for consideration as best video game movie is more of an indictment of vg movies and not a compliment to itself.

Huge lol at Hook. Probably my all time favourite film growing up along with Robocop.

Boondock saints deserves a -100 rating and everyone involved in that aids encrusted turd needs to serve jail time.

Except Billy Connolly he rocks

they did a decent job

they got too much story in the sequel and fucked it all up

i think keeping it simple was the best strategy

The best fued in the entire game never happened in the movie. The sequel was horrid lol

2002 plant of the apes has always been underrated. Some of the performances were damn Oscar caliber; especially giamatti and Bonham-carter.

That movie is at 45%. I'll take it over cgi. I would say 7/10 and worth watching.

Honestly I tend to think that the difference in the reaction between Robocop and Starship Troopers actually kind of goes against this whole idea that the 80's were this conservative era in Hollywood whilst the 90's was more forward looking..

Really you look back to hell of a lot of 80's(or very early 90's) action cinema and t'is incredibly cynical stuff that takes a very dim view of the establishment, its full of capitalism gone mad, corrupt CIA types, etc. Yeah we had a lot of US soldiers or police as heroes BUT they were almost always individuals and small groups often fighting against a corrupt system that had betrayed them and/or society as a whole.

You compare that to say ID4 released the year before Starship Troopers and its a film choced full of rah rah nationalism celebrating the establishment. Indeed if you really look at it the whole thing is kind of an advert for global facism where humanity needs an alien menace to bring it together, exactly what Troopers was lampooning.

I used to love the mortal kombat movie. The second one was absolute trash though.

Sorry my big words offend you, but yes, Boondock Saints is undeniably derivative.

As for Spaceballs, no, I never liked it. The jokes are weak. It's not one of Mel's best.

Comb the desert....get it...and then they bring out a giant comb! LOL! Pizza The Hut...genius!

It ain't no "Young Frankenstein."

Some great observations here, especially in the second and third paragraphs. Agree on all points.
The 90s were a great decade for the US, and Americans in general, but we had our heads up our asses. That was reflected in the media and entertainment. Critical portrayels of America(cans) didn't have an Audience among the genral public or critics. This was the decade of Forrest Gump, Will Hunting, and Jerry Mcguire.

Robocop came out during the Reagan years, which were rife with scandal. So it's cynical outlook had a more receptive audience. This also partially explains why Iron-Man 3 got great reviews from critics and was a massive hit. After the Bush years people were primed for it (and just to circle back, i'm to this day convinced that the only reason American Beauty did aswell as it did commercially and critically was the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal).

I guess the point is that timing is hugely important. And Starship Troopers was a poorly timed movie. Sadly, it's become just as relevant as ever.

Should've been r rated

Thats the biggest problem.

It is one of the better game to film adaptations, but fuck shit, had i NEVER played the game, i wouldve made fun of the movie.

Looking back at it, MK is cheese.

Literally zero chance it was getting made with an R rating in the early 90s. It's like when people score 10/10 rounds. It's theoretically possible, but judges never use that score so it's pointless.

We understand, but it doesnt change the fact that the movie sorta sucks.

As i said in another reply, if one didnt play the game, they would likely dislike the movie.

If i were to fantasize, id bet you 100%, if the movie was redone today, with an R rating, no one would ever bother going back to see the original.

I was right about IT, afterall.

I bet 8mm has a low rating. Crtiics shit on it because the script was notorious before it even came out. The movie is toned down from the script but all the critics thought it was jsut made to shock and a gimmick and never gave it a chance. But the movie is really good. Great performance by Cage.

Surprised by Home Alone.
Wow, the script was darker than the end product? 8MM is plenty nihilistic as it is. I remember it being good but needing a shower and a drink afterward.

Seeing so many classic movies from my childhood with rotten scores ITT has pretty much destroyed the last bit of faith in the Tomatometer I had. TBH I go more on the recommendations of Sherbros and IMDB than anything these days.

Rambo IV (2008) : 37%

I was bored to shit in that movie.

Just about 95% of the gore in the movie was cgi. Whats the WORST is i could tell it was fake while watching at its theatrical premiere! Youre supposed to go to a theater saying "howd they do that??" That's like going to the magic show and seeing the 'tricks.'

Ill bet its obvious as all hell now. All the blood has a brownish-grey tint to it, much like what you see in Walking Dead.
