Your example was of a guy who was still alive and charged with a crime. Pretty sure they knew who they were charging and charges are public record so the information gets released. You really can’t see how that is completely different than this?

Look at the times and when that story was edited/updated. The quote from "Identity wasn't officially confirmed" was after the statement by the NT commissioner just after he'd been tasered and arrested. That's in the quotes. At which stage he wasn't charged, but obviously they can confirm his identity relatively simply because he's alive and was out on bail when he committed the crime (he had the locked ankle bracelet on). That was @7pm (he was arrested at 6:44pm after which they said it wasn't terrorism). That story was posted at 8:20am the next day, and then updated with the additional information (the top section), as they continued with the process of officially identifying and preparing charges at 6:20pm.
Yes, it takes a bit longer to formally identify a homeless dead man from another state with no local family. No, they won't release the names or criminal history without formal identification. Although it's not a ban on the media reporting incidents/names without police identification (that takes a suppression order).
