I've had entire conversations by using a mix of gestures, Google translate, whatever scaps of the language I've picked up, pictures on my phone, etc. I had to teach math and biology to kids with little English. Diagrams and drawings went a long way.

If you put in the minimum amount of effort, most people will meet you half way and you can have a conversation

Totally disagree. Liberty, individualism and obstinance and opportunity are ubiquitous to all of America. Perhaps they are eroding, which is something I’d argue.

Sure, regions have their own identities too, but these are ingrained throughout America.

I don’t see the same commitment to those things (especially individualism) as I did in people growing up in the 80’s and 90’s. I’m sure a lot of this is manufactured though which gives me hope. People who are totally reliant on MSM really are not in touch with reality and the vocal minority is just that as shown by extreme left wing politics taking a huge L this last November.

Yes and also sort of, but in the Netherlands at least most expats don't or won't learn Dutch. People from the colonies and immigrants do at a higher rate. A lot of Dutch people are more annoyed at permanent expats not learning Dutch than migrants. They changed careers. Job had a big speaking component irrc so they had a better shot at getting it if they spoke English on top of Spanish and French.

To be a citizen, it is already required to learn English. Others residents dont need this requirement. People can and do make a good living in the States without good English.
Unless they need it for their full citizenship or a specific job, they should not be forced to learn it.

Why wouldn't it be similar? Besides the length of the project, what unique set of circumstances do you think America has that are different than Canada with newly arrived immigrants in the contemporary landscape?

America has much higher levels of diversity and immigration throughout its history, and it stands almost alone as a country defined by creeds more than any specific cultural traits.

Case in point, America has never had a official language, whereas Canada does.

Mind you, I have stepped foot in the US and it's basically become your MO to point out that these conversations have to pass an American lense to be validated and it's getting tiring since this is a conversation that is ongoing in the entire western world.

Why would I not point out that a conversation regarding whether English proficiency should be mandatory in America be viewed through the lens of the American experience? The TS ain't Canadian is he?

Sure, regions have their own identities too, but these are ingrained throughout America.

Three of those things are found in most modern democracies, it's really only the hyper individualism part that isn't found in other places. The obstinance is common, Americans just choose to be obstinate about other things.

America is really more of a collection of nations historically (mostly tied to who settled the area), tied together by common creeds (some are more ethereal than others of course).
