I was originally looking for a difuse effect because in Affinity Photo theres an effect called 'difuse' which looks really cool, but it's not animatable - it's static. So I was trying to find something similar in Davinci Resolve, but found that this sort of thing was done using a particle simulation.
Davinci Resolve is really easy to learn, so if you do give it a go, it will be fast and easy to try.
But After Effects is the industry standard, so you can't go wrong there, but Davinci Resolve has been far less buggy and more reliable for me than both After Effects and Premiere Pro. Plus you don't have to switch between different softwares - Davinci Resolve does it all in the one piece of software.
Here's the particle simulation using your avatar, and not reversed...
