Shogun tapping to strikes

wow bait threads this lazy still work in 2023?

Igor tapped to strikes against Coleman
Randy Couture tapped to strikes against Ricco Rodriguez
Ricco tapped to strikes against Glover
Tito tapped against Frank Shamrock (and maybe Chuck I think?)
Mirko, I think "tapped out" against JDS (gestured to the ref he couldn't see)

I didn't wanna include that one because Mirko actually poked him in the eye and then Barnett tapped. But Josh didn't make no excuse about it. Mirko 95% would've won anyways that fight but he put his finger straight into Barnett eye.
There was a lot of controversy about that one, one side was adamant that it was just a knuckle in Josh' eye, not a finger.
I think I was on that side, after much picture analyzing

The 2 biggest that get shit on for tapping/quiting are Shogun and BJ both these guys took horrible and don't think either could go on. The funny thing is I was never fans of ether untill these fights, both guys showed tremendous toughness and deserve respect
You making excuses for BJ quitting on the stool and then shitting on GSP for tapping against Serra really shows your bias

Penn wasn't injured, he didn't have a broken toe, he wasn't bleeding from a bad cut, he was just scared to get back in there with a pissed off GSP

He had the option of getting back in there and back his tough talk, but he chose the easy way out instead of taking his medicine.
Bully mentality.

GSP got clipped behind the ear, no equilibrium left, he knew he was finished and like in the Shogun/Jones bout, the ref was already stopping the bout when St-Pierre started to tap out
He then had to earn his rematch against Serra, which he did via beating beasts like prime Kos & Hughes
And put on a clinic on Serra

Penn was never able to win his way into a third bout with GSP; quitting on th

I never understood why it became a focal point for so many people. It's not the ideal way to have to lose in a sport like this but it happens, and it's normal. Like others pointed out, completely fine to tap out to a hug that would put you to sleep with a gentle hand but complete heresy to call it off after a sustained pounding from one of the hardest hitting men on the planet.

OK.

And I forgot, Frank Mir tapped to strikes against Javy Ayala, after having previously shown disdain for doing so... <5>

I think, for the "grand public", it started with the Gracies, and not just with tapping to strikes, but just tapping in general.
"Tapping out is death, Gracies don't tap out!!!!"

Then they started to figure out that they might want to tap to submission, but the shame had to go somewhere, so it was transferred to strikes.
Back in the daaaays, BJ Penn had a massive fanbase, and in the build-up to the GSP rematch, most of the trash talk on his part and his fanbase's part was focused on "GSP's loss to Serra shouldn't count as an official TKO, he tapped to strikes right after the ref stopped it!! no heart!!! bully!!! frontrunner!!!"

Then, well, what happened happened
"I'm telling you the truth, because he said a lot of bad things about me and he keep saying bad things, I feel great about it. For me, it's a big satisfaction. He said I'm a quitter, I'm not the one who didn't come back for the last round. So I feel very good about."

With the discussion of pride fighters in the ufc these days, this makes me wonder.

Is shogun the only pride fighter to tap to strikes? Does paul craig have enough stopping power in his punches to make a legend quit in mid fight?

I think he past his prime.

Just let people tap, imo. Nothing wrong with saving your own ass. It's all of the others who talk shit about it that make me iffy about joining in these conversations. Just let a man not die, ffs.

Shoguns chin was a detrimental aspect to CTE later. Jones has no power so it be virtually a drum session for 25min.

GSP is goat. Sera is no Jones and he made GSP tap. Given GSP is a foot taller, it was a bad look.

Don't forget guys, Zulu tapped to Fedor.

Am I doing this right?

Eh. Never bought into this. The timing of the ref, the onslaught already stopping, already being battered.

Has shogun ever spoken on this?

You can't compare your low level Amy fight to a lifetime of pro fights vs the best. You didn't take 0.1% punishment that they have. You didn't even make it to be an amateur. Dabbled into a fight or two and had enough.

Never ever got the hate for tapping to strikes. You guy's clearly haven't had a grown man on top of you raining down hard punches. Most of you usually just have grown men on top of you.
Yes. Shogun was smart tapping. I don't get the hate, the fight is over you're saving punishment.

“Hey guys, let’s all band together and talk shit about pussy mma fighters who tapped to strikes . . .”

This place is a joke with all you virgins behind your phones and keyboards. Sherdog loves to talk shit about something they’d never have the balls to do.

This place is actually level headed when it comes to this stuff. Go and look at mma stuff on Twitter or any other mainstream outlet, that’s where the delinquents are talking nonsense.

If one of you ate that first knee Jones threw you'd never want to fight again, let alone the subsequent onslaught of unrelenting punishment after it. This thread is fucking ridiculous.
