PC Sherdog PC Build/Buy Thread, v6: My Power Supply Burned Down My House

Alright buds, been a few years since I've done some upgrades. I've just started a new job and my first pay for the fortnight will likely be around $8,000. What's looking good nowadays for a full build? currently on a ROG Strix x570-e Ryzen 5800x and a 3080. Is it even worth upgrading anything other than the GPU?

I'd say its probably not even worth upgrading the GPU unless there's a specific case where the the 3080 is currently letting you down.

I'd wait until the 5080/5090 come out late this year/early next year before doing anything.

The miniPC I ordered for my dad came in, and the damn thing looked like it had been tampered with. The box was not sealed and when I took the computer out to examine it there was a rattling sound from either a loose screw or broken clip. I wasn't going to be using the OS it shipped with anyways, but that's too damn sketchy for me. Back to Amazon it goes!

Yeah I meant to say, those mini-PC brands do such low volume that I can't even see them in sell-out data. While low volume isn't fully synonymous with sketchiness, scale has its advantages usually. An M1 Mac mini is pretty close to your budget it you can stomach Apple in this instance. Otherwise, the Windows mini-PC market isn't great. Best Buy had some clearance price Lenovo mini-PCs recently, but their availability is hit or miss depending on where you are in the country.

Upgrade to a Ryzen 7900?

I'll probably do this. The 3080 let me down only in one early access game that ran like absolute horseshit without a super stronk modern GPU.

Eh, if I don't need to do a full new build I generally try to avoid that and that would require a new Mobo.

Well, that's the only CPU upgrade that makes sense: the 7800X3D. I don't think it justifiies a full new build. It kicks butt in the latest Techpowerup gaming benchmark roundup, but I surmise that's because the games they bench almost all benefit greatly from 3D Cache (when most don't), because otherwise, in nearly all benchmarks, there's not a significant difference between the two. Huge cost for nothing much. I'd recommend waiting for the new GPU upgrades and a CPU that meaningfully thumps on the 5800X without gimmicks.

A bit of patience is on your side because in that time the Gen5 SSD prices will continue to tumble, and performance in that class is still expanding quickly at the same time. The value sweet spot for DDR5 RAM frequency should also rise. Global inflation is supposed to be under control, so hopefully you don't get burned there.

No patience right now really, I can always do what I usually do and waste my money on guns.

Are you going to recycle any parts, or do you intend to just assemble a whole new build to make selling off your current PC easier? (or kicking it down to the GF which IIRC you did with at least some of the last one).

I can just give it to my GF, I generally rarely bother to sell computer parts. I either keep them in a room as spare parts or just give them to friends.
Also that should have read "no patience needed right now really" because I'm not in a hurry, it's more just seeing if you guys think it's worth the upgrade now. Otherwise there are always thermal scopes and .308's to be bought.

I got tired of Amazon sending me used items and am pretty sure a few things were counterfeit. I canceled Prime over a year ago and don’t miss it at all.
I spend a lot less now on frivolous items now. If you can’t trust whether they are shipping you the real thing or something that is used then their service becomes useless.

I have little doubt that it'll go right back on the shelf when they get it back.

I see you don't spend any less on frivolous words, however... 😁

I'm the jerk at work correcting people's grammar.
I deserved it.

Kind of debating if I should wait till September to November to go with the AMD Ryzen 9 3Dx or just go ahead and get the 9950 that should come out in late July. Just curious how much more the 3d version would offer than the 9950 and if the target date late this year sounds right and they won't postpone it till January and Feb next year

Said this in another thread when someone had a similar predicament. AMD have exhibited a pattern for overpricing their new to market CPU's. Then slashing prices ~6 months after release to combat inability to move units. 7K X3D release was also a shit show. Took nearly two months after release to get the Windows chipset driver and BIOS revision in order to make them functional.

I'd advise just getting the 7800X3D bundle from Microcenter.

They just dropped the 5700x3d down to $200.
If you have a first or second gen Ryzen and have been holding off on an upgrade, the time may be now.

I am sitting here in the same boat except running an older rig (I7 6700k and 1070).
I have been watching it rapidly drop since I first posted in this thread a couple weeks ago.

I am seeing games like Bodycam and Dragons dogma 2 drop and I finally am having issues playing games, admittedly I am happy with 1080p.
