PC Sherdog PC Build/Buy Thread, v6: My Power Supply Burned Down My House

I am sitting here in the same boat except running an older rig (I7 6700k and 1070).
I have been watching it rapidly drop since I first posted in this thread a couple weeks ago.

I am seeing games like Bodycam and Dragons dogma 2 drop and I finally am having issues playing games, admittedly I am happy with 1080p.

I went from a 1070ti to a 6650xt and got about a 40% increase across the board.

My issue is my CPU. I can run everything good enough (1080p) for my liking, but my CPU won't run a few newer games from this year. I still get 60-150 FPS on most games I play at ultra settings.
I am considering running an AMD GPU after my deep dive on computers. How do you find the 6650xt? Part of me is considering a budget build. My last PC was 3k and prebuilt.
My monitor is only 1080p and to be honest I am happy provided the game runs well.
I am a bit weird in that I want my games to look like games, if I want realistic graphics I would rather just go outside.

That is a pretty old cpu. If you’re considering a new build, I think now’s a decent time to go with AMD. They have a new line of chipsets out for their motherboards, so 3-4 years down the road if you feel the need to upgrade that cpu probably won’t be a big deal. If you go with them though you’ll have to get the new ddr5 ram which I think is still pretty pricey.

Edit: actually the prices look like they’ve come down on ddr5 now. I think now’s a good time for a new build for you.

Edit: new amd cpus in July also, so may want to put it off a little bit longer

Yeah that's exactly what I am seeing. @MAD Mick put together a Pc part picker list that has been pretty hard to beat (minus a GPU).
I am definitely leaning towards AMD for the CPU. The annoying part is my CPU was fine until Dragons dogma and Bodycam came out.

To be honest my computer still runs everything I play with no issues, but it would be fun to build something. I replaced my SSD recently after running with no hard drive for 2 years.
It really does just seem to be plug and play to build a comp, once you take out doing the math of power supplies and cooling requirements.

Have you tried Dragons Dogma recently? It came out in an absolutely terrible state so some of what you struggled with may be better now.

I don't meet the minimum specs with my CPU. I haven't played it yet and I know people have been running it with similar systems. I never purchased it when I saw that and could run it on my other halfs gaming laptop if needed.
I am sure it would run fine, but it seems fun to upgrade and do it myself with something more future proof. My last buy was my first ever actual PC buy that wasn't a gaming laptop.

If I am honest my main game is Rust which I hate with a passion. Outside of that I occasionally play Insurgency (which runs fine except internet wise) and drop in and out of RPG games like Skyrim, Enshrouded or the most recent equivalent of these. My computer runs them all fine at high settings in 1080p.

Ah I assumed you had trouble running it. Well I’m never against upgrading and your build is certainly old enough to justify it. You should up the resolution on your monitor when you do. I recommend a good 1440 oiled ultrawide monitor

I was about to buy it and then saw I was outside min specs, but I will probably grab it when it goes on sale. I usually avoid buying on release these days. The last game I did buy was Cyber punk during COVID.
Cyber punk ran flawlessly, but I never did finish the game because I got it in my head I needed a better computer to enjoy it properly.

Haha yeah that's why I am thinking of a double AMD combo. Something like a 7600 or 7600x with either a 7700xt or 7800xt with a budget to mid level 1440p monitor.
Should be more than enough for me, though Nvidia is pretty decently priced in AU and I can get a 4070 for around $8-900. Just doesn't seem worth it though.

My current PC is seemingly on its last legs (built it 10 years ago without any upgrades) and want to know your guys' thoughts on how much I would save by buliding rather than buying pre-built

Last I heard the major prebuilt companies are quite competitive on pricing, with the "assembly premium" typically being less than $100*. I think the biggest advantage of doing it yourself is knowing exactly what went into the system and that its configured precisely how you want it.

*We're talking typical consumer type builds here, not the crazy RGB-everything, hardline water cooling, flexing my e-peen builds

Pretty comparable, slight disadvantage for pricing in US prebuilds but you can buy them overnight and not have to wait months to price hunt.

Also depends what performance tier you're looking at, prebuilds tend to be more competitively priced at the budget end to midrange.

Setting aside component quality and your preferences there, prices are ok for what you get. Best Buy and Costco have comparable or better (during discount seasons) than this.

FYI, if it matters, ABS is Newegg's housebound (equivalent of PowerSpec for MicroCenter).

How long are you willing to wait, or are you just interested in buying as soon as possible?

I can wait, just my current PC is dying. When do discounts usually happen?

You'll see some during Prime Day in a few weeks, Intel Gamer Days doesn't do much, November will be the deepest discounts, particularly going into a refresh cycle.

Are you set on 4070/4070 Super or are you willing to go to 60 tier?

I could go 4060, just want something that'll play GTA6 at high settings when it comes out, maybe do some video editing or something

I can tell you how configurations are priced and how those discounts are, other folks in this thread are far better equipped to tell you the quality of those prebuilds. Just looking at what's available right now:
  • Alienware R16 with 13700 and RTX 4060 Ti is $1,299 now, it'll be back there again in mid-July.
  • $1,174 CyberPower GMA5400BSTV11 with Ryzen 7 5700 and RTX 4060 Ti, it'll be available in Best Buy stores for the next couple months. It's nearly identical to a system CyberPower ran during last Black Friday that was one of the 5 best selling gaming desktops in the past couple years after they dropped it to around $900
  • For RTX 4070 prebuilds, these two models are currently jockeying in the top 30 best selling gaming towers in the US since they are very aggressively priced: iBuyPower and MSI
  • Finally, at Costco, MSI has a new desktop there, it'll be discounted in the next couple weeks, probably just $100 or $150 off.

Hope this stuff helps, happy to check pricing history if you need to know whether a discount is good or not.

TLDR: You should be aiming for around $1,500 or a little less for i7/R7 RTX 4070. RTX 4060 and i5/R5 a good deal is around $900 for the next couple months.

You think I should jump on that Alienware first one, or may it go down in the near future?
