I know you'd like to upgrade soon, but hold off a little bit if you can. AMD is releasing a new line of processors in the first quarter of 2016.

Ugh, maybe I can play games on low settings til then

I'll think about it, but the items I listed are good upgrades?

FX6300 is considered one of the best value per dollar cpu's. But, it is already 3 years old. Someone else will chime in on the video card.

picked up my first piece today, was a great deal so I snagged it even though its a bit overkill.

PSU: EVGA - 220-PS-1000-V1 - EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 (Platinum)
Paid $108 after tax, shipped.

whaaaat that is an awesome deal where did you find that

So Newegg customer service gave me some items I should go with, these look okay or could I get better

You know AMD has just been sucking on the CPU front for a good while now. I seriously recommend going for an i5

Just a quick search, 4690k and a decent mobo for $350

As for the GPU, I am not really sure which is better between a 390 and a 970 but I'm sure the difference is negligible. I am a fan of nvidia though and I do think they do a better job supporting their cards in the long run

FX6300 is damn near equivalent to a i3 4160 and usually $20 cheaper.

I would only recommend AMD CPU if you are on a super tight budget. I ran the 6300 overclocked to 4.6ghz and it still ran like shit compared to an i5 (obviously cheaper, but i had tons of stutter etc that was not there on the i5 setup.

You're comparing CPU's of 2 different tiers. I get worse performance out of my G3258 compared to my 3570k but I know it's not fair to compare them.

I would agree with that upgrade choice if he could use his old mobo. But if you're going to have to go all in on a new platform you might as well invest the extra $100 and have a CPU that never struggles in gaming, unlike the i3 and the 6300 that he will be able to notice as worse to use. If he's going to spend 1k on upgrades, then I see absolutely no better way to spend $350 of that

Not bad and wouldn't break the bank.

Me personally (have over 10K post in PC hardware forums, been building for almost 15 years) I don't think it's a bad idea.

FX 6300 isn't a monster of a CPU but its still 3x faster than the consoles CPU and you would save on not having to buy a new motherboard (this isn't like last generation when you needed a monster CPU just to keep up with the Xenon and the Cell).

R9 390 would last you forever if you plan on sticking to 1080p.

Going i5 is ideal but if your staying at 1080p then nothing wrong with FX 6300/R9 390 (lets be real, you can spend $400 on the upgrade and run games on ultra 1080p or you can spend 1000 rebuilding your PC and at the end of the day guess what you will be doing ? Running games at Ultra 1080p which is what you would be doing regardless).

If the 6300 concerns you (power wise) your motherboard accepts the FX 8120/8150 and with a bios update accepts the 8320

I understand that, which is why I said I would never recommend going that route unless there was a very strict budget. An extra 100$ is going to go a very long ways in this case and ensure he is happy with performance for years to come. The FX6300 is going to be a bottleneck for any modern games.

Not true at all (the consoles CPU's are signfantly weaker than a FX 4100 and where making a shift towards GPGPU).

Bottleneck is the most overused term in the entire history of PC's

It won't be a true bottleneck where it's always behind the GPU maybe, but clearly it is going to cause drops in performance that you wouldn't see with a better cpu paired with a 390/970. That problem would be intensified by any cpu heavy game. Doing a quick google it seems the general consensus is that it's best to pair that cpu with a mid range card like a 960.

The performance drop isn't going to be that much (the nex gen engines are finally kicking in and there less resource hungry). Not only that but they have phased out the 360/ps3 kits this year which has basically eliminated sloppy ports (ps4/xboxone use the same architecture/kits as the PC so eliminating the last gen code has done wonders).

As a result most of the major titles in 2015 have been very low on CPU horsepower (my backup PC has a Phenom x6 and it rarely goes over 60 percent usage ).

There will be some performance lost on a FX 6300 but paired with a 390 its not going to cause enough to where you can't get very high settings 1080p (it's not going to be signficant enough to where you have to turn everything down to medium or high).

I've seen many benches where moving from an FX chip to i5 increased FPS by ~10 with the same GPU. 10FPS doesn't sound like a lot, but that can make the difference between a smooth 50-60 FPS and dropping down to 30-40 FPS.

There is tons of data showing Intel chips outperform AMD across the board. I am not saying they are bad. I ran a heavily overclocked FX chip myself.

So buy the motherboard and then update the video card Newegg recommended as well?

I just want to my PC better and able to play super high graphics. I don't really care for 4k, do the ultra 1080p sounds right in what I want to do.

I just bought that new Warhammer game and have to play medium or low. Fallout is my next big purchase and I want the mods, so I don't need those slowing things down.

I don't know much about the insides of a computer, so thank you for the info
