Sherbros that changed careers

Was groomed to take over the family lumber business in Olympia but decided to break away and start my own construction business with my wife. Of course she got majority stake through the divorce so after kissing that goodbye I started a real estate brokerage and have been doing that ever since. :)

I spent 16 years overseas working overseas in shitholes and quit cold turkey to go to college. @Vitor CroCop I'm doing my BSN

Though I am yet to reap the rewards of a new career since Im still studying, at least I feel I am progressing.

If you're not happy in what you are currently doing- you need an exit plan.

I worked in network security and telecom for about 12 years. One day there was a massive blizzard on the night I had work, so I braved unplowed highways and managed to get into the office. This was a big deal cause my resource firm's contract clearly stated they had to have at least one of us on site, rain or shine at all times. So I basically saved the whole team's asses by going in.

Morning comes and a few of our cars are snowed in, so the company puts us up in a hotel. I ordered a huge breakfast and billed it to the room, so they fired me. This irked me quite a bit cause I was a pretty damned good employee and I had risked my life (car spun out multiple times) in the snow to help out my employer. Then I started thinking back on my career history and its like...you know what? Network IT sucks ass. It's boring and filled with assholes who think they're smart cause they memorized the name and function of every port there is. So it was time for a change.

I switched up my resume from "network security" to "technical communicator", cause I wanted to try some technical writing. Instead this landed me an application security job with an old employer, a top 5 global bank. I signed back on and never looked back. I'm still there 5 years later, I work from home, and I'm a VP.

The moral of the story: tweak the shit out of your resume. Don't lie, but use your existing experience to drive down a different career path.

yea, I went from employed at 49.
to retired at 50.
does that count?
Nice, enjoy your retirement mate. I’m 52 and I will retire in 3 years. Can’t wait.

Lol you bums. My dad is 78ish and refuses to retire. Still gets down in manholes and shit for his lineman job.

I keep trying to get him to retire.

When I told him I'm officially retired after the Army he almost killed me. Noone retires at 39!!!

I am ready to retire now (32 years in airforce), but I just accepted a 3 year assignment in Florida, so I’ll give it one more quick go. My wife and i are both healthy, so we have many good years to look forward to.

No we’re buying a small farm about 2 hours northeast of Quebec City. I love outdoors and we spend just as much time outside in the winter.

I was a land surveyor for 8 years.

Taught myself programming and spatial data which led to a much better series of roles and now starting my own company.

School isn't necessary in my case, if you're willing to work like a savage you can get most things done.

Start making and selling drugs. Soon you will find your self fucking bitches so they can get a cheap high. Hell you wont even have to worry about bagging that shit, they will be happy to take it. If you get caught, you wont even have to worry about a mortgage and shit. Your housing will be paid for and you get three meals a day.

Thought about trying to specialise deeply in your field? Highly specialised roles are harder to offshore or cost cut on. Although they are harder to find jobs and might involve more travel.
I'm not much chop in telecoms, but I see jobs like fibre splicers as being more resilient to industry offshoring?
Or is your industry not like that?

Yeah I am pushing for more certification etc to secure more skills and my position but my company doesn't want to fork out the money for training full time staff, they're end goal is just to have a lot of project managers directing contractors around. Everything is still up in the air, a lot of jobs like fibre splicers or guys that do residential works are glorified labourers these days, thanks to the 457 visa program.

31 is old? I know a guy who started med school when he was 40.

Bump.

Looking at shifting to an Account Executive for a software company.

I am currently an IT / Analytics contractor.

High correlation between changing careers and getting banned.

I just retired from 30 years in the classroom and am looking to work in a different field. Funny how half the people who responded in this thread are banned.
