Serena Williams cries "discrimination" over drug testing

Any muscular tennis players are going to cop the suspicions, because traditionally it's been a heavily cardio oriented sport and the physiques of the athletes have reflected that.
I bet Sam Stosur gets her share of testing.

That's mentioned in the article. She was tested more than any other athlete. Someone has to occupy that slot. She's #1 in the world, and she once locked out the drug testers. They don't take kindly to that.

Didn't she just come back from a Baby break?
I don't know the procedure but it might be possible they test athlete coming back more often?

She's always played the race card at any sign of adversity. Her and her sister intentionally fixed a match years back. There were rumors swirling before that the fix was in and when it happened the crowd booed the fuck out of them. The sisters spun it as racially motivated .

I was going to say this as well. If you come into tennis looking like you should play football, expect to get tested.

I don’t know what this dumb bitch is complaining about. You’re a competitive athlete. You get tested, it’s part of your job. Get over it. I’m an amateur powerlifter and we get tested all the time. Nobody complains.

Technically she didn’t say racial discrimination did she? Maybe she just meant they’re discriminating against women who look like Wesley Snipes in To Wong Fu

I'm not trying to argue with you but I just have to mention that I hate hearing things like "the black community".
Why is there such a need to group people together by skin tone? As if all dark skinned people are the same.
Just like the good old "latino" label. They are all the same right?

Maybe it is just me but I have thought this way for a long time. When people can start to be judged as individuals, we'll start to lessen prejudices and racism.
On the deepest level, I agree with this, but practically speaking, I only use this language because I understand the black community remains so distrustful of individuals with my skin color, and our motives. For that reason our moral authority is often treated with less respect by these people (this is our own fault; our history has laid a groundwork for the very rational distrust of our institutions of power).

Don't read more into it than that. I'm simply conceding that my voice will not be the one to lead the black community in these matters. They need to embrace it themselves.

Venus Williams was tested an average number of times, so there goes what she was implying. The ever going victim mentality is an experience. Other blacks won't call her out for it, many of them are already on board the victim train on basically every issue.

What does she expect with a build like Ed Reed

Thanks, and I understand your point.
However, I think that we all need to do our part. It starts by not saying "these people" and "black community". One step at a time.

Have a great day!

@Madmick What does this have to do with black vs. white or the black community? She didn't say racial discrimination. There are other types. There are also other black tennis players who don't get tested as much as she does.

Maybe you're reading race into a basic sports story where it doesn't exist?

Did she actually mean "racial" discrimination though?

She might just be talking about her status.

Oh my.

These are not my terms, and no values have been imposed on the defined group by mentioning them. I am not characterizing them with my beliefs, but trying to echo a general grievance voiced by their group-- as they define it. One of the first steps we need to take is to correct the racist misapprehension of innocent terms or rubrics which are unavoidable to forming a sentence that carries descriptive power-- that carries meaning. Otherwise we will always be doomed to address problems inductively, rather than deductively, and I'm afraid that doesn't work; specifics are vital to understanding the parts before you understand how they relate to the whole even if they are never separated from the whole.

Say you are mixing paint. You're trying to achieve the right shade. You are being brought colors from different helpers; red, yellow, green, etc. If everyone agrees the mixture goes well every time until one group brings their specific color to mix, then you have to consider the mulit-parameter truth, which is there is a less predictable synergy between paints that might not be specific to that group, but generally speaking, it makes sense to say, "Hey, red paint guy, could you try something different?"

That goes for everyone bringing paint to the palette. We all must scrutinize how our bubbles overlap, and what might we be doing that is contributing negatively; either as an individual, family, or member of a more closely-knit tribe yoked by some trait like race. Do you freak out when sociologists, economists, or leftists talk about the problem of white men holding too great a concentration of power and wealth? How that contributes to divisions and larger problems?

If you don't, then you don't object to "these people". You sound very young to me. You sound like someone who has been trained to identify biases, but hasn't yet had much practice with these tools.

Well, to be fair, it's a long road that must be traveled before we're anywhere close to viewing people as individuals. Let's start by doing away with making note of the "First Black" to do anything that a member of a different race has done. Let's do away with Black History Month. How about convincing BET to change its name and programming to be inclusive to all races? Maybe the Image awards should go away. Alos, the NAACP might want to spread out and represent people who aren't "Colored" as they themselves apparently like to say.

I work in a technical field and have seen copies of "Hispanic Engineer" magazine. Yes, it exists and soley exists to make note of Hispanic Engineers. You'll have a hard time moving past grouping people if the people themselves wish to be viewed as a "Black Astronaut", "Hispanic Engineer", "Transgender Model", etc etc.

Given the context, #StayPositive is an amusing choice of hashtag.

Would only be better if she was trying to raise awareness for HIV or something.

She posed it with a question mark. That's fishing. If you would like to entertain other possibilities, be my guest, but I firmly opine the history of black athletes decrying discrimination based on racial grounds warrants the strongest reading, from Jesse Owens to Jackie Robinson to today, and since she offered no other explanation, she invited all interpretations, including my own, all with equal validity. Mine is the strongest reading,

Argue your case. Is she decrying sexism? Anti-Americanism?

I agree, all of that should be done away with.

Confused by this part in article...

"..Cops responded to the 911 call but quickly left the property when the misunderstanding was discovered. It was not known whether Williams submitted to the drug test."

If the cops responded and left and the tester remained would not Serena be REQUIRED to submit to the test or that gets reported as a serious violation?

This does not speak to guilt like Aldo having the off duty cop in the gym kick the tester out while he hid.
