How am I lacking nuance in understanding rust belt voters? Just because I didn't mention every single kind of Trump voter doesn't mean I was implying that those three positions I mentioned were the only good faith reasons to vote for Trump.

I'm well aware that rust belt voters liked Trump because of his protectionism and that this helped flipped the rust belt for him, in fact this is common knowledge and has been talked about ad nauseum. If anything its given far too much weight in explaining Trumpism but sure, it exists. Between 2009-2014, I was one of the most active mods in the Heavies, if not the most active, so I guess it's a numbers game that I'll come across people I capped back in the day. It was never personal, though...

Did you do any research into Jan 6? The words he said that day were among the least offense thing he’s done. How about all of the things he did leading up to that day like planning fake electors? How he pressured Mike Pence to steal the election? Nothing about that?

Since I was talking about political rhetoric, I've focused only on rhetoric. Even that's tangential to the topic of this thread, namely the latest attempt on Trump's life. But I've been very frank whenever anything's been put to me directly on any other subject, and if you want me to talk about what Trump did rather than what he said, then I'll say that I of course think that what he did was Nixon-esque and I don't know how anybody would even begin to defend it morally or even legally. If our system wasn't so broken, I'd think that what he's done would've disqualified him from even being allowed to run again. I stop short of thinking that assassination is the next best thing, though. Too many people seem unable/unwilling to pump those brakes, and that's terrifying. I can hold both of those thoughts in my brain at the same time, though. That brings us to this gem:

I'm thinking/hoping that this is more projection on your part than anything else, because it's definitely not what I seek to put out.

You also specifically mentioned that you were taking issue with people who think Trump is a serious threat to democracy, which I do.

Once again, my issue is not with what people think, it's with the dialed-up rhetoric, i.e. what people say and how they say it. I think that Trump's stupid and at this point more toxic to this country than whatever good anyone could muster up on his behalf as a person or as a President. But people talk about him like he's fucking Putin, which he's not. And he's certainly no Hitler. The hyperbole doesn't just eliminate nuance by definition, it closes down even the possibility of rational conversation. That's what I take issue with. I'm on record in here calling him stupid I don't even know how many times at this point, and I don't even think that he should be allowed to run again given all that he's done. But he's more a symptom of a toxic and broken system than anything else, and the hatred of him has reached such irrational proportions that it's having the unintended consequence of alienating rational people. No matter what anyone believes across the political spectrum, no matter what "side" you're on, if we all can't see this, acknowledge it, and want to change it, then we're fucked. Do you really think I'm so wildly off-base in saying this?

As for @Islam Imamate and @BFoe, I don't really know you two, so I'm not going to impute to/project onto you beliefs or behaviors of which I'm unsure. Instead, I'll just point out that while you guys were making jokes to one another at my expense and liking each other's posts, all around you there were dozens of people liking and complimenting my posts; it might be worth taking some time to step back from your keyboards and examine whether you're as right(eous) as you think you are and whether people who don't think what and as you think might still have good points worth considering.



Again, it's not about not "holding him accountable," it's about not freaking out and shrieking like lunatics about how he's the most evil entity that humanity has ever known. It's the wildly dialed-up rhetoric that's the problem, not the reasonable people who listen to him talk and watch how he conducts himself and point out that he's a stupid and shitty person. If I'm going to be put in some alt-right MAGA box because I don't think that his words or actions on January 6th should be viewed as akin to Spartacus leading an attack on Rome, fine. I absolutely think that his words were stupid and irresponsible, but I wouldn't elevate them to the level of a crime. Even if all of this is true and it isn't and you know it because you're a liar and an exaggerator, it doesn't change that Trump is a threat to democracy and that it really needs to be discussed that he's a threat to democracy.

He tried to send the election back to fake elector slates man... and he has openly spoken about abolishing the constitution and he practices double speak and manipulative speech patterns purposefully designed to troll people and create divisive and chaotic emotional reactions in various people and groups in the country. In this respect, he is the worst leader I have ever seen in politics in my lifetime. He is a genuinely despicable human being on every single level and totally and completely unfit to be the president.

People could be a threat to the system in many different ways. Some really good ways and some terrible ways and its situation dependent.

An incredibly uncharitable first impression if I do say so myself.

The point I was making which you've yet to address is that its not hyperbole to point out Trump is a threat to democracy. He is the only sitting president I can think of who took concrete, extralegal steps to prevent the peaceful transfer of power and overturn a free and fair election. That does in fact make him a unique threat to the democratic institutions and norms of this country and pointing it out is not hysteria.

Even if all of this is true and it isn't and you know it because you're a liar and an exaggerator, it doesn't change that Trump is a threat to democracy and that it really needs to be discussed that he's a threat to democracy.

He tried to send the election back to fake elector slates man... and he has openly spoken about abolishing the constitution and he practices double speak and manipulative speech patterns purposefully designed to troll people and create divisive and chaotic emotional reactions in various people and groups in the country. In this respect, he is the worst leader I have ever seen in politics in my lifetime. He is a genuinely despicable human being on every single level and totally and completely unfit to be the president.

Trump was no threat. Not a shot was fired... except the murder of Ashli Babbet. He told people to be, "Peaceful" under no uncertain terms. He called for 10,000 National Guardsmen prior, but Pelosi and the Democrat Mayor of D.C. turned down the request. A greater threat to democracy is having elections we cannot trust because of bias MSM coverage, drop boxes, unrequested mail in ballots, vote harvesting, votes counted that were dated after the deadline, and observers not allowed to observe. You want no more "Democracy", then make over half the people not trust the process. You just got there.

The Left Cult seems afraid to say it out loud. They are 100% good with violence if it forwards their cause. That's why almost none of them denounced the riots that were far greater than anything January 6 was drummed up to be.
