Social Sandy Hook families seek 2.75 Trillion from Alex Jones

The families had to move due to the harassment, and one of those that was arrested for harassment had history as an Info Wars contributor.
Jones also failed to comply with discovery, tried to hide his money, and in direct contradiction to Jones' testimony, his lawyer sent evidence to the familiy's lawyers that he went ahead with the story despite knowing it was false.
Also any reputational and emotional damages awarded are obviously amplified by the number of individuals and the circumstances of just having had their kids murdered.
Not at all surprised they hit him with such an amount, he also did his best to increase it with his own commentary on the case.
here is some context

I dont know anyone that can name one of these victims family persons
there were multiple victims
this addresses the fame portion of defaming - hard to say your rep has been tarnished when nobody knows you or you did 15 minutes at best, carl rittenhouse, ok, that guy was defamed, and he didnt get trillions, did he even get millions?

this leads to emotional damage. If the state worker dies on the job, you might get 2M settlement, that is an amount for totally destroying a person, potentially family's income ability, emotional damage to the max.... 2M. Maybe it's gone up due to inflation, but that's a common number.

these folks are trying to shake down Alex for 10's of millions which he doesnt have..... and he's not even the one that killed the folks at sandy hook. Alex killed no one. So you had to move.... because of a troll.... not really buying they had to move in the first place but if you're being gracious, that's not worth 50M

It seems like such a comically large amount

Maybe he should not have defamed and harassed families of dead victims for a quick buck on a medium with a large audience stupid enough to actually believe him. Just a thought.

It was a major case involving political funding, which found that political organizations and their affiliates had first ammendment rights regarding who and what they spent on. A byproduct is that news media was now unbeholden to integrity and facts, and for-profit would be allowed.

Afew years later, CNN was born. But they usually kept the integrity for the most part. It wasn't until 96 when Fox News decided "Lets anger people to vote"
And then there was Bush v. Gore.

That’s what I don’t understand, sue him for what? I can see libel maybe- but that isn’t mentioned in the article I read which stated harassment only.

From what I’ve read, it was harassment that OTHERS carried out without Jones specifically inciting such behavior (stating an opinion is NOT incitement). Holding commentators responsible for what their audience does on their own seems like a terrible precedent.
You're assuming he didn't know he was wrong. I didn't follow the case but I'd expect the opposing counsel had a pretty good insight into what Jones really knew and didn't know after all his text and email messages were sent to him by Jones's lawyer. <lmao>

I have a feeling after that it was pretty easy to convince a jury of his ill intent.

The number sounds ridiculous. But if there is no cap, that’s what happens. Alex jones pushed his theories and should stand by the decision.

Jones made the identity of several of the parents he named "crisis actors" well known. Pozner and Parker. At least one of the harassed parents committed suicide, although that wasn't a feature of the trial.

Jones profited directly from the lies he knowingly told and the traffic it generated. Contributors to his company/website were directly involved and arrested for the harrassment.
He failed to comply with discovery to the degree he forfeited the case by default and then committed perjury after sending the documents he failed to provide to the opposing counsel.
At which time he was on air talking about how he had no intention of changing his behaviour and openly deriding the entire process while trying to hide his assets.
So of course the billion dollars in damages was punitive (no cap and not avoidable through bankruptcy). His actions were malicious and he profited from them financially.

The "2.75 Trillion" wasn't awarded obviously, and wasn't a specific figure named by the families' lawyers.
Their actual argument was, “The only appropriate punitive damages award in this case is the largest award within the court’s power,” lawyers for the families said in the filing. “The defendants have acted willfully, maliciously, and evilly, in full knowledge of the harm they are causing people who had no means to fight back, except to bring this case.”
The "2.75 Trillion" number was just someone's calculation of what the maximum amount could be, based on the maximum state fine per violation of "sale of products using false statements" multiplied by the number of views. They were awarded $965 million in this case, although it was one of three defamation suits against Jones.

they are now auctioning off alex jones' shit, and theonion just bought infowars.

infowars.com has been shut down.
