Social Sandy Hook families seek 2.75 Trillion from Alex Jones

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Jones didn’t harass anyone, he made erroneous claims about the veracity of the shootings… that’s not harassment. It’s also hard to claim he was a direct cause of others harassing the families, unless he was advocating/directing people to harass the families, which doesn’t seem to be the case.
Anyone defending someone who told his audience that "their dead kids are fake" should reevaluate their political situation.

“Victims’ families who sued Jones said they were subjected to years of torment, threats and abuse by people who believed the lies told on his show.”

He put videos of grieving parents, people at their absolute most vulnerable and suffering through the worst possible scenario, on full view on his shitty little channel and told his viewers these people were lying to them. He didn't hide who they were, no steps to limit the damage of his actions.

Now I'll admit I don't necessarily know what definition of harassment you're working to, but it ain't the same as mine or the definition of the country I'm living in. That's harassment in it's scummiest form, and what makes it worse? It was done for money.

Sure, USA has massively different laws, but it makes no difference to me. I'm glad he's getting destroyed, just like he was happy to destroy others (only he didn't have a valid reason - there is a valid reason for destroying him, though).

Fuck him, dude.

I've kept up with Alex Jones since the mid to late 90s, because I was a huge 3D Realms/Duke Nukem fan and forum user, and they were based in Texas.

They would reference him every now and then back then, and up to the shitty DNF game, because conspiracies and aliens were cool.

It was slightly harmless when he was talking about fluoride turning frogs gay, because even though a small amount of people let their teeth rot, it was still funny to us.

Then he started the Sandy Hook thing for ratings. Legit saying it didn't happen, and these crying parents were actors because they went on news stations. It was atrocious.

*Then* you not only have idiot people believing him, but also moronic celebrities like Ronda Rousey continuing the lie. Up to the point that parents of dead children are being harassed by strangers.

Should he pay? Fuck yes. And so should everyone in this thread defending him, acting like "oh, first amendment bro" fuck off.

Meh, your using feelings to try and override the rule of law, and I’m very reticent to throw out free speech based on an appeal to emotion.

Jones posted whatever he posted and made commentary about it… that is not harassment in its traditional form (although it seems to be in the realm of cyber-bullying or the like, now that I think about it). I’d imagine libel or slander might be more fitting, but I still have a problem with charging Jones for what his viewers did- unless he incited their behavior.

The fact that Jones doesn’t seem to have “harassed” anyone.

Charging a commentator for what listeners/viewers do is ridiculous- unless the commentator is specifically inciting such behavior.
He told his fans that it was fake.

Perfectly summed up, my man.

Again, I'm glad he's getting destroyed. He deserves it.

@PhitePhan that's okay, you can call it "emotional", absolutely fine with that. What I was explaining in that last post is that it absolutely counts as harassment per UK law, and that's how I'll continue to look at it. I don't look at what happens abroad and think "oh well, that's okay because their laws may or may not permit it" - if I think it's foul and wrong, I'll say so. Not having a go or being snarky here, I'm just offering my side 👍

Its not whether it was Alex Jones or Barrabas for fucks sake.
Its about silencing voices with different opinions.
One day it will be your voice that everyone will want to silence.

His voice was allowed.

Someone sued him in a civil court. He had all the money, time and power to defend himself.

The government hasn't censored him.

Sure thing. As I understand it, the UK does not have a Constitution or as absolute right to free speech as the US.

I very much value free speech and the sentiment that short of inciting violence or directly slandering someone or libel, speech should be protected above all.

This all happened in the US and we’re commenting on US law, so we’re obviously approaching this from very different perspectives.

He told his fans that it was fake.
And he was wrong, that’s not a crime.

We get wrong information from news/commentators all the time (some of which has led to FAR more damage than Jones could ever do)… should they all be at risk of legal action?

So they were allowed to sue him.

If you have thousands or millions of conspiracy type fans, and you say that?

Yeah. Fuck him.

That’s what I don’t understand, sue him for what? I can see libel maybe- but that isn’t mentioned in the article I read which stated harassment only.

From what I’ve read, it was harassment that OTHERS carried out without Jones specifically inciting such behavior (stating an opinion is NOT incitement). Holding commentators responsible for what their audience does on their own seems like a terrible precedent.

His words actively caused people to harass others. Parents of dead children.

That's why. And anyone defending such notions is a cunt.

Freedom of speech isn’t really a “political situation” and I’m not defending Jones, simply pointing out facts.

You do realize freedom of speech only protects you from th government, not from getting sued by private citizens right?

It was a defamation case.
The damages awarded were on the basis that his defamation incited the harassment.

Yeah man, people shouldn’t be able to express opinions if they hurt peoples’ feelings… solid logic you got there.

I’d say the cunt’s are the ones who are willing to throw away fundamental rights based on feelings.
