Yes muay thai is bigger and more popular.

but i just looked into sanda, which is basically kickboxing but with takedowns/throws.

reason why i think its a better base is because not only the takedowns, but their distance and movement from striking to takedowns is more suited for mma. They catch kicks and sweep opponents a lot.

muay thai relies a lot on power kicks and its a more stiff stance. But thats because their rules score kicks heavily, but kicks themselves are already strong, so being light on the feet and kicking is more effective for mma.

Cung le

Zhang weili

Those are successful sanda fighters. Would be interesting to see more guys from that style crossover to mma.

it may be a better striking base for mma than classic muay thai

Theorically yes, but also depends on the fighter. Although Sanda has throws, it has zero ground game after it hits the ground.

OK but what do you think about the argument against strong kicks that the UP has made?
Not sure about that, but I watched some Muay Thai vs Sands fights and the MT guys did better. The Sanda shots had a crazy sound, while the MT kicks had less sound, but did more damage.

I have little familiarity with this particular martial art, outside of seeing some of the fighters mentioned. Forgive my ignorance, but are Sanda and Sanshou the same? I recall Sanshou being talked about a lot during Cung Le fights, rather than Sanda.

I think muay Boran is a Lot better.
Is Very close to muay thai, and has originally developed for war, but today we have muay boran academies and tournaments, so even with the war back ground, they're suited to 1vs1 figths today.
Is very similar to muay Thai, but with a lot of wrestling involved, a lot of arm bars, ground and Pound and even few submissions headbutts are not allowed on MMA/UFC but not a big deal.

But they fought under muay thai rules right? A muay thai guy would probably struggle under sanda rules.

I think san shou is the traditional martial art and sanda is the competition derived from san shou. Not sure though

And im very sure a Muay Thai fighter would struggle much, much more in a Sanda rules fight, than a Sanda fighter under MT rules.

I had no idea Pat Berry was a Sanda guy.

I'm excited to see more Sanda fighters. I dropped in at a school once. I was intrigued at the idea of mixing striking and throwing and had intended to train there for at least a year, but they fought out of a sideways stance and I would have to relearn most (all?) of my striking. I settled for an ordinary MMA class.

Cung Le came from San Shou and made it work well for mma

I like that type of kickboxing style where TDs are allowed

Those Chinese Sanda guys from the UFC converted to Muay Thai when they came to the UFC. Professional Sanda isn't that popular in China anymore. Those Sanda guys make the conversion to kickboxing nowadays.
