Which owners and/or promoters dont take financial risk? The yankees, or the lakers dont take financial risk? You think boxing promoters dont take on financial risk putting on a bout?
And yes, people these days ESPECIALLY talented prospects for pro sports definitely think of the $$$ b4 devoting themselve to a sport. We are not talking about recreation or for fun. For serious athletic talents, of course it matters to which sport they can make the most out of. Its not a socialist commune.
You clearly lack the historical business perspective of the UFC. Dana and the Fertitta's bought the UFC as a struggling business and built it from that point. The major sports franchises virtually guarantee the owner a profit. And if not a profit then the opportunity to sell the franchise at a significantly higher price than they bought it so as to offset the 'loses'. Boxing promoters know full well the events are money makers and take almost no financial risk.
And no a teenager does not think about the money they will make as they are developing their skills. They devote themselves to a sport long before thinking about the professional prospects. I know this from experience. I have a son that has a talent for a sport (probably more than one). He has chosen the one that is probably the lowest paying from a professional perspective. Sports in the US now virtually require a young athlete to focus on one maybe two sports due to time constraints. How is it possible to say what sport a 10 or 12 year old will excel at when they are 18, 19 or 20? He and I give no consideration to the amount of money a professional can make. Why? 1.) He likes that sport the most. 2.) There is a fraction of a percent of a chance that he will ever be good enough to become a pro so he may as well enjoy the pursuit as much as possible because it's a significant investment in time (and money for me). Because his best chances lie in a good education and maybe (the chances still aren't good) he'll get a scholarship in that sport to help with that pursuit.
