haha are you kidding me man. shrimping can be very helpful and is one way to get someone off you quick if they had you mounted.

Ryan Hall is probably not aware of this. You should tell him.

can someone explain to me what exactly is the "mechanical advantage?" ryan describes my philosophy well as far as basing my strategy on getting on top, and yet i don't believe gravity is an advantage only the top person has, and even though gravity is not something ryan hall mentioned specifically and the mechanical advantage could refer to any kind of leverage, it's something people on the forum assumes he means by mechanical advantage and you could assume that's what he means, i did as well.

gravity is just a consistent downward force. it's nobody's friend. a take down as well as a sweep completely rely on the fact that gravity is pulling everything down. nobody would go down and stay down if there was no gravity, whoever gets on top is simply the one who uses it better. if there was no gravity, there would be no jiu-jitsu at all. i really believe the top guy has an advantage, but i don't think it's gravity.

gravity is why your weight is felt. so gravity is to the top persons advantage. why do you think escapes from mount/side control/knee on belly are hard for the person on bottom but the person on top can just stand up and walk off. because the person on top does not have to lift anyone's weight but a portion of his own.

i mean you really cannot argue with that.

Gravity amplified by technique (making your weight heavy and limb placement) and being pinned to the ground (and the friction that the ground provides) are some of the "mechanical advantages" imo.

Thanks for putting that up. Coincidentally, one of our instructors (whose instructor, also one of my instructors, was a student of Rolls, Rickson, and Carlinhos) was teaching a side control escape last night that was basically this. The key points were: 1) Bumping into the guy like Saulo shows/Taking an underhook with your far arm 2) Shrimping correctly ie Keeping contact with the mat with your far foot, hiding your close shoulder under yourself 3) Using that "connection" to create a frame using your underhooking arm, your knee that is up (the leg "connected" to the mat) and your hidden shoulder

I had read about it so many times but didn't know exactly how it worked until I felt it. Using the frame, I had teammates that outweigh me by quite a bit put as much pressure as possible to try to flatten me out. The frame held well. The only thing I was able to do when teammates established the "frame" was try to go to the back, as flattening them was almost impossible without giving up too much space for them to reguard.

Anyone care to try to figure out the super secret techniques from this now? Isn't this how everyone shrimps in practice? You will usually see a slightly different version when people are drilling (IE: both are gets straightened, both legs are pushing), but doesn't everyone connect the knee-to-elbow when they are actually escaping?

While I commend your efforts for posting this, this for the most part is EXACTLY what Rickson said he doesnt like when he see's people doing the hip escape/shrimp. At 0:01 you see how your legs are close together? While Rickson was walking around telling everyone to "Feel it", one of the things he stressed was not having your 2 legs be so close together. The arm positioning in this video is right for the most part, but the leg positioning, foot work, and angling is different than what Rickson was showing.
