Ryan Hall doesn't believe in guard or shrimping...

Oh, thank god you showed up on the 22nd page to clarify this. Just when I thought i'd never grasp what Ryan Hall had said and his thoughts, your post brings brings it home.

We can NOW put this issue to rest... Ryan Hall never said he doesnt believe in escapes...

Piss off.

What I got from it is your shoulders should be perpendicular to the mat or even chest facing down after the hip escape. Making it harder for top man to flatten you back out. And to go to your knees. I know that was never stressed to me. And it makes sense. Isee so much sloppy hip escapes even at my gym

Can you at least let us in on these two details?

Why is this damn shrimp technique shrouded in mystery?

I'm not trying to keep any secrets. I just didn't know if anyone else had shared already.

God I hope I don't sound like a tool explaining this shit. Okay, so the traditional way of shrimping is getting on your hip, both arms out framing against the guy and the hips go out to the side to make space. So the "new" way is similar except instead of using both arms to frame, only the top arm extends to push against the opponent. The bottom arm stays close to the body and guards the neck. Your chest should be almost side ways. From here it's really easy to come to the knees or replace the guard.

The key detail is really hiding the bottom arm. It keeps the guard passer from pulling up on it which negates any space the guard player tries to make.

So anyway, I'm not sure if this was clear at all. Hopefully a video leaks soon.

Thanks GM.

Makes sense. I'll be trying it tomorrow in class.

Is this escape similar to this, just hiding the inside arm more?:

hmm, thats how we've always been taught to shrimp...interesting

I've just been introduced to pulling your bottom elbow underneath you while hipping out. It works wonders.

I tried this a bit in class today based on GM's post. I'll wait for the video before I try it again.

Kinda same here. I was initially taught different, but Rafael lovato showed me to do this way a few years ago. Keeping the arm TIGHT to the body.

Except today is tomorrow. And he's let us down.

:(

I didn't go to class yesterday or today. If it makes you feel better instead of recording something that might make a break through in your BJJ I stayed home and ate chocolate cake.

I'll get it up. Just bear/bare with me.
