"Russia has downplayed the risk of a dirty bomb plot in Ukraine just days after claiming Ukrainian officials planned to stage such an attack following a chorus of NATO warnings rejecting the allegation.

“We have got what we wanted,” Russian deputy ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy told reporters at the United Nations. "If this all does not happen, I do not mind people saying that Russia is crying wolf because we are speaking about a terrible disaster that might potentially threaten the whole Earth.”

This is possible IMO but I don't think the man himself is necessarily the dynamo behind this war (though he probably was behind the attempt to force an early political settlement). Yeltsin intervened in Serbia to protect "fellow Slavs", pretty much any Russian leader would be deeply concerned with Ukraine falling out of their orbit. What changed since the 90s was now we don't think they get to have an orbit. Right or wrong- what really matters is the test of strength.

Based on the loses and captured figures I've been seeing... it seems like close to almost every modernized Russian tank has been destroyed or captured.

Pentagon spokesman Air Force Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder said Ukrainian troops are still training on the air-defense systems and the NASAMS will transfer to their custody once the training is complete.

"As soon as the training program has been completed, which we anticipate will be soon, the two initial NASAMS that are ready for delivery will be passed to the government of Ukraine," Ryder told The War Zone. "Due to operational security considerations, I am not going to provide any more details at this time."

Ryder deferred to Ukrainian authorities to make the official announcement that NASAMS have arrived and are operational, although the first indications may come via open-source intelligence showing the missiles being launched at targets and destroyed pieces of them on the ground.

"Coverage of the combat work of anti-aircraft defense of the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is not provided," the Ukraine Air Force said in a translated statement posted to its Facebook page. "Also this applies to the process of arrival [in] Ukraine of anti-air missiles systems" and specifically mentions IRIS-T and NASAMS. Evidence of an IRIS-T surface-to-air missiles system, which Ukraine received from Germany, surfaced last week.

Several on-the-ground sources in Ukraine relayed the message that they had arrived.

The Pentagon has promised Kyiv eight NASAMS systems and an unspecified amount of ammunition. Ukrainian officials have been clamoring for more air-defense systems, especially since Russia recently launched a wave of missile and drone strikes targeting cities and power generation facilities. The War Zone delved into the potential advantages NASAMS could provide Ukraine in this piece. Its primary armament, as Hayes mentioned, is the AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-To-Air Missile (AMRAAM), the same munition used by U.S. and allied NATO fighter aircraft. That means there is a potential steady supply of rounds for Ukraine’s NASAMS systems to fire.

Hayes was answering a question from host Jim Cramer about why the Biden administration has not provided more-capable MIM-104 Patriot missile systems to Ukraine. Those surface-to-air missile systems are deployed in 18 countries “to provide everything from ballistic missile defense to defense against drones.”

I enjoy rus propaganda more than comedy.

But also looking at it from another point of view, it's a nice attempt at amnesting himself. For six months during the SMO there has been a silent but fierce 'war' in the background in Moscow between the 'liberal' 'pro-negotiations' wing and the 'hardliners' 'ultranationalists' wing. Most oligarchs, journalists and overall people of the 'elite' who were on the 'de-escalation' 'everything going according to the plan' wing had the advantage for months but lost it at the end. Regular people were fed with terrible stories about ukronazis for years and years and the pride of the rus army who can stomp them real fast. Nobody believed the 'everything going according to the plan' wing anymore. Majority was asking for 'getting serious about the war' and it's why the 'hardliners' won. And hence Putin went with partial moblization and partial martial law, to please the 'ultranationalists' mostly supported by the FSB. And the new 'we're actually fighting the whole western world' narrative, to dampen the effect of the defeat. But most actors on the 'pro-all-out-war' wing are not being light at all on the government officials, on the generals, on Putin or on Solovyov. And they'll no doubt about it want clarifications and responsibility in the case of total defeat. Solovyov is trying to put the blame on other 'officials' who didn't report the 'truth' and mislead the leader and his entourage but if things don't turn around magically in the next few months there's no yelling on the mic that saves him from accountability on who put the country to shame.
