someone who should have had significant personal security

that's the thing though - he didn't, because he's not actually a key member of the govt, nor an important advisor or strategist, etc, but rather a rather fringe theorist who got fired from his university job years ago for pushing aggressively for war, at a time when Moscow was still trying to avoid conflict by pursuing the Minsk agreements.

Hence as someone put it, he was chosen because he was as 'high profile as they can reach' (rather than someone actually important who does have security like Medvedev or whoever).

I suspect one effect of this will be Putin asking some very pointed questions of the FSB. One of their primary roles is internal security. There is no way assassins should be able to get close to senior Russian officials. Apparently, several high ranking FSB officers have already been purged over their poor performance regarding gathering intelligence before and during the invasion of the Ukraine. This won't help their reputation.

Killing a high value target in a hostile country is one of the most difficult intelligence/special forces operations to carry out. The Israeli's have done it in Iran. Russia has carried out assassination in several countries, including the UK. The CIA had the Phoenix Program during the Vietnam War, but failed miserably to kill Castro in Cuba. If the Ukrainians did indeed carry out this bombing, it shows a world class level of professionalism.

If we are talking about Moscow, there even not organized stuff might happen.
As I had posted earlier...due to trend in some period a lot of Ukr from mixed marriages does have russian name and surname ( cos this was then trendy...esp in Nikita times btw) and are listed as russians and does have Russia's pasport and are living in Russia and speaking russian with 0 accent.
For example listed as russian Ivan I with Russia's passport and speaking russian without accent and with Russia's education easily might be also 1/2 belarus or ukr by bloodline...

And the same Moscow even does have enough muslims too btw.
One stuff are immigrants cos " they will work maybe cheaper "...another thing is that some areas in Russian Federation are muslim areas and they does have Russia's passport cos were "born in Russia "....

Why to kill Medvedev?
He is on vodka diet and when he uses twitter and telegram etc...when is too drunk....it is cool anti advertisement for Russia in foreigners eyes...

Medvedev btw really still is top3 top5 person in Russia...
He was used as PM and president...
Just due to excessive drinking he wasn't anymore used as PM or president.
Otherwise: political party trust him and Putin and Patrushev too. He is one from best Putin's and Patrushev's friends and their apprentice....

Btw this nazi girl's father is russian nazist.

This book is awailable in russian.
Electronic versions is piece of cake to translate from russian to english and read up....
If someone doesn't have ban to use google and isn't blind....

We discussed the territories in Ukraine being 'unwinnable', but boy did this escalate quickly...

It's not just potentially occupied territories in another country that Putin has destabilised, Russia itself is now paying a heavy, heavy price for Putin's unwinnable war.

Terrible, and RIP to the young woman, this is totally out of hand at this point. Russian oligarchs and war mongers are no longer safe anywhere by the looks of it.
Exactly my sentiments. As soon as I saw this news I thought 'It has started'
Do Russians feel safer now for Putin's actions?
The Russians thought the Chechnyan terrorists were bad, this is going to be on another level.

My understanding is that Dugin is more well known in the west than in Russia, so this attempted assassination is most likely for a western audience. As an aside, it seems like a realistic peace agreement is not going to be made for a very long time.

This has oligarch/internal stuff all over it, personally 99 percent sure its not ukr

Probably stepped on someones toes

Dugin is like Navalny is his core. Russian nazi imperialist dreaming about future supersize superempire....far beyond Warshaw block and East Germany areas...

Regards to agreements with russia looks that genral western audithory still are dreaming pupps in cubicles and had lerned nothing as ususally dreamers can't learn their lessons and always are delusional...

Kremlin didn't had changed since 1949 th in it's core...
Where for Stalin wasn't problem to get gifts and lend lease from West....and negotiate about Berlin and western delusional dumbasses trusted Stalin....
Stuff that they were complete idiots had been proved in 1949 th when Stalin had slapped in the face his allies who had helped him damn a lot and threated to starve till death ppl in West Berlin and demanded to cede him West Berlin.
Looks that westerners posting here didn't had learned cool history lesson.
And how Stalin when had tested nuke and had just 1-2 working nukes in arsenal, already started to bully them like pupps...
Therefore NATO had been created....LOL.
_
Dreamers never will stop to dream.
Let's " sell " Russia this or this and they will be our friends.
Kremlin's core is the same as it was in 1925 , 1949 th.

I remember that westerners still are a bit delusional until something will fall on their heads...
Like with Japan and Hitler ( western pussies even excused Hitler about Austria, Sudetia etc....and as payment for being pussies get Hitler's planes in London, deNazified by Hitler Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark....

senior russian official? dugin?
nah man. kremlin sees him as a nut. he holds no power over anyone worth a fuck in russia and certainly isn't privy to information or near any inner circle of putin.
he's a millenarian jirinovski.

He wrote a book in 1997 called Foundations of Geopolitics and it is often cited as being a huge inspiration on Putin, to the point that it's basically a blueprint for his actions. From the wiki:

  • Germany should be offered the de facto political dominance over most Protestant and Catholic states located within Central and Eastern Europe. Kaliningrad Oblast could be given back to Germany. The book uses the term "Moscow–Berlin axis".[9]
  • France should be encouraged to form a bloc with Germany, as they both have a "firm anti-Atlanticist tradition".[9]
  • The United Kingdom, merely described as an "extraterritorial floating base of the U.S.", should be cut off from Europe.[9]
  • Finland should be absorbed into Russia. Southern Finland will be combined with the Republic of Karelia and northern Finland will be "donated to Murmansk Oblast".[9]
  • Estonia should be given to Germany's sphere of influence.[9]
  • Latvia and Lithuania should be given a "special status" in the Eurasian–Russian sphere, although he later writes that they should be integrated into Russia.[9]
  • Belarus and Moldova are to become part of Russia.[9]
  • Poland should be granted a "special status" in the Eurasian sphere.[9]
  • Romania, North Macedonia, Serbia, "Serbian Bosnia" and Greece – "Orthodox collectivist East" – will unite with "Moscow the Third Rome" and reject the "rational-individualistic West".[9]
  • Ukraine should be annexed by Russia because "Ukraine as a state has no geopolitical meaning, no particular cultural import or universal significance, no geographic uniqueness, no ethnic exclusiveness, its certain territorial ambitions represents an enormous danger for all of Eurasia and, without resolving the Ukrainian problem, it is in general senseless to speak about continental politics". Ukraine should not be allowed to remain independent, unless it is cordon sanitaire, which would be inadmissible.[9]
In the Middle East and Central Asia:

  • The book stresses the "continental Russian–Islamic alliance" which lies "at the foundation of anti-Atlanticist strategy". The alliance is based on the "traditional character of Russian and Islamic civilization".
  • Iran is a key ally. The book uses the term "Moscow–Tehran axis".[9]
  • Armenia has a special role: It will serve as a "strategic base," and it is necessary to create "the [subsidiary] axis Moscow-Yerevan-Teheran". Armenians "are an Aryan people ... [like] the Iranians and the Kurds".[9]
  • Azerbaijan could be "split up" or given to Iran.[9]
  • Georgia should be dismembered. Abkhazia and "United Ossetia" (which includes Georgia's South Ossetia) will be incorporated into Russia. Georgia's independent policies are unacceptable.[9]
  • Russia needs to create "geopolitical shocks" within Turkey. These can be achieved by employing Kurds, Armenians and other minorities.[9]
  • The book regards the Caucasus as a Russian territory, including "the eastern and northern shores of the Caspian (the territories of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan)" and Central Asia (mentioning Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan).[9]
In East and Southeast Asia:

  • China, which represents a danger to Russia, "must, to the maximum degree possible, be dismantled". Dugin suggests that Russia start by taking TibetXinjiangInner MongoliaManchuria as a security belt.[1] Russia should offer China help "in a southern direction – Indochina (except Vietnam), the Philippines, Indonesia, Australia" as geopolitical compensation.[9]
  • Russia should manipulate Japanese politics by offering the Kuril Islands to Japan and provoking anti-Americanism.[9]
  • Mongolia should be absorbed into Eurasia-Russia.[9]
The book emphasizes that Russia must spread anti-Americanism everywhere: "the main 'scapegoat' will be precisely the U.S."

In the United States:

  • Russia should use its special services within the borders of the United States to fuel instability and separatism, for instance, provoke "Afro-American racists". Russia should "introduce geopolitical disorder into internal American activity, encouraging all kinds of separatism and ethnic, social and racial conflicts, actively supporting all dissident movements – extremist, racist, and sectarian groups, thus destabilizing internal political processes in the U.S. It would also make sense simultaneously to support isolationist tendencies in American politics".[9]
The Eurasian Project could be expanded to South and Central America.[9]
There is a direct line between him, the new right, trumpism and bannon. He even here praises bannon and the altright

Zirinovski was Putin's friend and he get 5-6 % in Russia's president's elections.
Zirionsky party played better choice variant, more aggressive and radical while ...in municipalities and parliament they not rare cases had supported with their votes decisions made by " United Russia "..
So completely to call Zirinovsky as clown is not correct ....
He wasn't clown. He was rich old ex communist supporting " United Russia " political course while he just was more radical in his promises and speeches...
If nation is able to gave more than 5% from votes in president's elections to guy constantly advocating carpet bombing for Paris and Berlin...then you might get what stuff electorate in Russia is and...will get that Putin isn't even one from 50+ more aggressive politicians in Russia...

He's being reported over here as a close ally of Putin.

It's clear that Russians dying in Ukraine is of no concern to Putin.

He doesn't give a damn.

But I bet he gives a damn about this.

One thing to pay attention to is if Girkin changes his tone. There is a very real faction that is highly critical of how Kremlin is handling this "special operation" that are calling for all out mobilization and something close to total war.

He's being reported over here as a close ally of Putin.

It simply is not true.

This has oligarch/internal stuff all over it, personally 99 percent sure its not ukr

Probably stepped on someones toes

If you're right?
This is a good way for Putin to get rid of anyone who might disagree with him and gain support for his "special military operation" by blaming any "assassinations" on Ukraine.

Now that's 4-D chess.

Yup, theres probably a lot of oligarch games being played right now

Heavy internal power struggle in donbas region as well from what i hear since everyone wants to be king of new region

What toes and how did he step on them, do you think?

Ones made of flesh and putting leg on them?

But honestly i cant say since this oligarch level stuff is so corrupted there can be million reasons and they really never come out

Guy got killed 2 years back near my countrys border still no clue why
