International Russia/Ukraine Megathread V8

I guess we're just ignoring this itt

Well people can hardly be expected to starve if the Russians are passing out food and there's nothing else coming in.

IMO this is part of the Ukrainian strategy- the people they quickly rounded up, imprisoned, or straight up disappeared right after the invasion did scare many straight. If Ukraine regains these territories there will likely be thousands of people either shipped off to prison or executed- I think the intent is to make sure any Russified locals flee in terror so they don't have a potential 5th column in the future.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...ldier-exposes-rot-at-core-of-ukraine-invasion
A Russian paratrooper has published an account of his time in the war, which includes a pretty savage criticism of the government and what is had done to the army. He describes the war effort as shambolic:

“Like savages, we ate everything there: oats, porridge, jam, honey, coffee … We didn’t give a damn about anything, we’d already been pushed to the limit. Most had spent a month in the fields with no hint of comfort, a shower or normal food.

“What a wild state you can drive people to by not giving any thought to the fact that they need to sleep, eat and wash,” he wrote. “Everything around gave us a vile feeling; like wretches we were just trying to survive.”

“I know it will sound savage to a foreign reader,” he said, describing a fellow soldier stealing a computer. “But [the soldier] knows that this is worth more than one of his salaries. And who knows if he’ll be alive tomorrow anyway. So he takes it. I’m not trying to justify what he’s done. But I think it’s important to say why people act like this, to understand how to stop them … What a person will do in these kinds of extreme situations.”

He railed at length against what he called the “degradation” of the army, including the use of dated kit and vehicles that left Russian soldiers exposed to Ukrainian counterattacks. The rifle he was given before the war was rusted and had a broken strap, he said."

“We were just an ideal target,” he wrote, describing travelling to Kherson on obsolete and unarmoured UAZ trucks that sometimes stood in place for 20 minutes. “It was unclear what the plan was – as always no one knew anything.”

Can't post pictures in this thread, but he is a brave man and deserves to have his name known: Pavel Filatyev

He gave the interview in the link in Moscow, living in different hotels, not understanding how he could evade arrest - but has since fled Russia. Extremely interesting read.

anyone here in the marines, or was in the marines, or is subscribed to something called the United States Marine Corps Gazette (is this a real thing)?
reason i ask is because apparently there's been a series of articles published over there about the war and i'd like to read them if any of you has a pdf, or a scan or anything.

sounds interesting but i'd like direct access and some sort of confirmation it's for real.

Why did you selectively remove some sentences??

Before the war broke out, Igor Kurayan, a 55-year-old from the southern Ukrainian port city of Kherson, shared frequent gardening updates on social media. His feeds were full of palms, pomegranate trees, marigolds, bamboo and avocados, grown at his home and small business near the Black Sea. He called it his "fairytale garden."

On February 25, a day after Russia invaded Ukraine, Kurayan posted a selfie on Instagram with a rifle, announcing he had volunteered to fight in the Territorial Defense Forces, reserve units of Ukraine's military. Soon after, Kherson fell to Russian troops and in early April, after weeks living under and protesting against their occupation, Kurayan was abducted. He was watering plants in his shoe store when he said Russian soldiers dragged him outside and threw him into a van.
There 3 versions...
Fake story....
Or they issued him rifle to make him post in useless social networks...and then took rifle away...

Third version: he doesn't know what to do with rifle, hoped on mercy and cool nice handling by occupiers.
___
Didn't get to read all in full.
In war usually better works stuff when you do or die...

I.e he then should had fight vs invaders and/ or relocate to ukr controlled areas....if to hold this place was impossible.
Or...die...

BTW IMHO if really Rus does have so much ukr POWs this doesn't tell anything good about ukr...
BTW they also are stupid if had surrounded.

All you need to know is that van Riper is a moron, long retired one thankfully.

Seems unnecessarily cruel and may force many to side with Russia by default. If you're a tratior for taking their food then might as well go all in

Guy is salty over Estonia's decision to tear down WW2 monuments.

Russia has been operating mandatory conscription in these areas for all males aged 18-65. Standard russification practice. If Ukraine does manage to retake these regions, the only people in them will be women, children and the elderly.

Ditto Ukraine.

Also accepting humanitarian aid won't be just done by men......

If Ukraine retakes those areas I doubt there will be many people at all left regardless of age or gender

... irrelevant
