what’s the point of starting mandatory service 6 years down the line? I don’t get it..

Sorry for answering latvian's question, BUT I guess they understand Russia is in a bad position economically/politically/militarily to afford a second front due to the complications in the already long ass front in Ukraine and know that consequences of all kinds won't allow Russia to bite others like they did now Ukraine for at least the next 10-20 years, hence the long term preparation. Zinger and Sandis of course can give you a much better answer.

why not start it 6 months from now? Why the long delay. I think it’s a great idea all around to be honest and wished the US did it as well.

Russian millionaire linked to Putin energy giant Gazprom found shot dead in pool

"He is the sixth wealthy businessman with links to the Russian state-owned gas company Gazprom to have been found dead in unnatural circumstances since the start of the year.

Yuri Voronov, 61, was head of a logistics company that held lucrative contracts with Gazprom in the Arctic.

His body was discovered floating in the swimming pool of his mansion in an elite village close to St Petersburg on Monday.

He had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

A pistol is said to have been found nearby, with ‘several spent cartridges’ allegedly located at the bottom of the pool.

The Russian Investigative Committee is investigating his death which is believed to be linked to ‘a quarrel with partners’."

People just refuse to understand.. Russia and everything in it belongs to Putin and Putin alone.

Maybe not. This shit happened all the time after the fall of the soviet union. I think people know the government has too much going on to care.

Russian Prisoners Offered Freedom If They Join Fight Against Ukraine:

"Relatives of prisoners serving sentences in the city told investigative media outlet Important Stories that the notorious Russian mercenary Wagner Group is offering to pay 200 thousand rubles ($3,446), and an amnesty, for six months of "voluntary" service in the Donbas region—if the prisoners return alive.

Convicts serving sentences in IK-7 "Yablonevka" and IK-6 "Obukhovo" in St. Petersburg were also reportedly offered a five million rubles ($85,873) compensation for their families in the event of death.

A relative of a convict told the news outlet that prisoners were asked to "defend the Motherland."

Newsweek is still trying to verify these events and claims.

The prisoners were first told that only those who had previously served or fought in battle would be considered. But a few hours later, everybody was considered, and some 40 people signed up.

"All this is only in words, it will not be recorded anywhere on paper. At the same time, all the information is not transmitted directly, but through the foremen [prisoners who help the colony staff manage the units]," said a relative of one of the prisoners.

The prisoners were told that about 20 percent would return, a relative said."

Wagner is on rise right now from what i heard due to better conditions than regular army. That being said by far riskier.

regular army popular in certain regions (poor regions thats where most guys are coming from)

@SandisLL How do you think, does this decision have something to do with the previous NATO summit that happened a week ago? The timing is amazing.

Maybe Washington ordered us to do this. Or maybe the summit didn't fufill our expectations, we got a reality check and have to resort to this to cover ourselves.

Because this feels like a rushed decision. I like it, but it feels very sudden. No prior discussion.

We begin next year. Deal with it. Pabriks flipped his stance upside down. In february he was screaming louder than anyone that mandatory service isn't happening, when the topic first came up.

Shaaaaaady.....
Seems like something in the Finnish model is the way to go.

90% of it will get skimmed off by various contractors, politicians, and power brokers. Ukraine ain't gonna see more than 5-10% of it at most. It's pretty much like an IMF project where the money brokers get their cut and the party receiving their "aid" gets turned into a nation of debt slaves.
No maintainance on those dams on the Dnieper River for 30 years. I doubt the foreign money will get allocated much better.

I never really understood why people complain about it its only 1 year max and you are not send to fight anywhere. Its only defensive

Personally i took it as experience that you cant get anywhere else really.

The pay is shit, people's careers get interrupted, they have to abandon their families, a year of life is wasted away, training is pointless, because either Uncle sam will fight for us or Russia is too strong, conscription is slavery, poor men die for the rich, and Latvia is a piece of shit country not worth fighting for. Finland and estonia are way cooler. Fuck the country, it's all about me. I can make all the problems go away by hopping the border and going somewhere better.

Something like that is what I'm reading in the pathetic reddit thread.

Its pretty common for a lot of people to eat strawberries, does not make them porn stars.
Next you are going to tell me, eating a banana makes you look gay.
It does if you swallow it without taking any bites. <{shaqs}>

We don't have the personnel, the gear, the funds and the infrastructure to pull it off in full scale yet. It will take time to develop and reach full capacity.

But voluntary conscription does begin in January.

This explains why Turkey changed their position on Sweden entry into NATO. Turkey will control like 30 percent of all grain exports in Europe no doubt that not a bad deal.

"(Reuters) - Ukraine is holding talks with Turkey and the United Nations to secure guarantees for grain exports from Ukrainian ports, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Monday.

"Talks are in fact going on now with Turkey and the U.N. (and) our representatives who are responsible for the security of the grain that leaves our ports," Zelenskiy told a news conference alongside Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson."

"
"This is a very important thing that someone guarantees the security of ships for this or that country - apart from Russia, which we do not trust. We therefore need security for those ships which will come here to load foodstuffs."

Zelenskiy said Ukraine was working "directly" with U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the issue and that the organization was "playing a leading role, not as a moderator."

News reports have suggested in recent weeks that such talks would soon be taking place in Turkey.

Russia trying to control it no doubt that will be a huge fight.
This is clever. Whoever thought of it should be given a medal. Putting Turkey in direct opposition to Russia's interests. They drawn Turkey into the fight now.

I browsed reddit (lol) to see what people think about this and looks like another thing that might be making a comeback is mass emmigration.

<45>
Lol they can go to Russia
