International Russia/Ukraine Megathread V12

Makes sense why Putin is desperate to have sanctions lifted as its long term affect is hurting Russia. How long can Russia fund this war as UKR is getting funded from numerous countries.

Russia now looks that switched from attempts to hit Kiev to Odessa and it's area.
It is closer to missiles launch area so shorter notice time for air defense + looks that most likely more capable AA batteries etc are installed for Kiev and it's area.
So to hit Odessa and it's area is easier than to hit Kiev.

Yep, and ofc its a good excuse to retaliate for Kerch bridge attacks

Tell me about your “peace” plan and how it should go?
It is not a "peace plan," it is a cease fire plan. Put the war on hold like North and South Korea. An armistice ending organized combat operations.

Yeah, that is what I keep saying about some of the stupid posts relating to this conflict.

Ditto. It's a bit frustrating with how often it's used as news / source.

But fuck twitter , not for me

Only reason I still have it. Really good real-time news and opinions on a wide range of events from politics, events and sports.

I understand people not liking it though, especially with Musk's recent changes. I still think its the best source of real-time news available overall.

e.g. Learned a lot about this conflict on there.

Jesus Christ, should be illegal to be that stupid. Still amazes me the amount of people that don't seem to understand Russia started this senseless war but UKR gets blamed for fighting back.
You don't understand what's at stake here. As always.
The simple thinking of people who don't see (understand) the whole picture:
Russia invades Ukraine. Ukraine fights back and wins. All is good and back to normal. That is what you think right?
Again, the Ukrainian Army is shrinking. Where will it be a year from now? The west gives Ukraine most of what it wants, except new soldiers.
Ukraine loses over half its Army 'trying' to push Russia back to its border only to have Russia start a second offensive to the west where Ukraine now has no soldiers to fight back. Indeed, losing 90% of your Army so that now anyone can invade your country was a very smart idea. There comes a point where tanks, planes, and ammunition do not matter if you don't have people in your military to use them. A difficult concept for some of you to grasp.

. Ukraine liberates half of territories seized by Russia – U.S. Secretary of State (msn.com)
Nice spin by Blinken.
He is talking about territory to the North in March 2022. Everyone else is addressing territory to the East and South.
No wonder China (Xi Jinping) does not even listen to what this guy had to say.

That line facing east which has barely shifted ( around Bakhmut ) just shows how effective dug in defences are.

Most of the front is now dug in. For both.

Any pushes against those defences are going to come with a insane cost . For either nation. Whoever attacks is going to pay dearly sadly.

Finally! A smart one in the bunch.
The Ukrainian Army is going to 'die on that hill.' It should be building defenses of its own instead of pushing an offensive forward. Forget about tanks and planes. They barely have enough artillery and ammunition. Save what is left of the country or they will not have a country in another year or two. A shrinking Army that thinks it can push back on a dug in Russian Army that has not even tapped into 50% of its reserves. A lesson here to be learned from the French and Germans. Of course, in winter, nothing will move. Ukrainians should have learned that from their time with the Soviet Union in WWII.

I'm hoping the f16 will open up the airspace for Ukraine. I doubt they will dominate it like US but I really hope they can see a significant change. My fear is that there won't be enough high quality pilots. Flying an f16, any fighter jet, is a highly skilled job. Tough to replace any losses.

A couple of retired US F-16 pilots have stated they'd be willing to volunteer as pilots.

Actually the Ukrainian counter offensive is really just offensive attack against Russian dug in defensive lines. A counter offensive is like out flanking a charging enemy on both sides.

A counteroffensive is when your enemy goes on the offensive, takes territory and then you launch your own offensive to take the territory back before theyre able to consolidate and build proper defences in their newly acquired territory.

He recounted how his unit captured and then lost a series of Russian trenches because AFU fighters had trained hard, prior to the launch of the summer offensive, in capturing defensive fortifications, but had not practiced holding them against counterattacks. Taking a Russian fortification means becoming an inevitable target, he said.

“As soon as there is an attack, Russian artillery starts to work on us with everything it has, and they hammer our positions from front to back, the infantryman said. “Every hundred meters of land we gain means 4-5 infantrymen who have left the ranks – this is the average loss.”

“As long as we are standing and holding on, we can say there are no losses; there may be some light injuries. As soon as we move forward, there are hefty losses. Up to half a unit for every kilometer we capture, and it is not a given that we will hold this kilometer later,” he said.

Until Russia collapses, because UKR has the resolve and leadership to send Russia back to Russia at whatever cost. Negotiating for peace is nothing more then a freeze in the war which is not an option for UKR. I believe the allies said they will see this through until UKR victory which is the only option.
Russia will never give up and retreat as Putin is incapable of that no matter the cost either.
Hopefully the west can keep the pace of newer and more advanced weapons to give them a bigger edge.
Question is when will Russia collapse? If it does happen in an about a year is the opinion of a few “ experts” I’ve watched online but who really knows.
The fact that Putin is trying to use the grain deal as blackmail to get sanctions lifted is very telling.

What makes you think Ukraine is capable of pushing Russia back to Russia when we're seeing them get slaughtered with esentially unmoving frontline? The Russian "collapse" hopes are just that, hope. Just like how people have died of old wage waiting for North Korea's collapse. Russia isnt seeing this as some military adventure in bumfuck nowhere vs peasants on the other side of the world. They've seen it as a red line since the start of the war and have double downed on the war effort. Theyre mass producing lancet drones, theyre training more men, theyve increased artillery production, tank production etc.
Theyre set to acquire 1000 new t90m tanks https://militarywatchmagazine.com/article/russian-army-t90m-t72b3m-production

Not to say that i think Russia will overrun kyiv or something but they will likely hold what they have maybe gain some more territory in the south. The war is now about how much territory will ukraine lose in the peace deal. If the idea is to push russia back tothe border, we'd be seeing news of 1000 M1 Abrams being delivered instead of a few dozen bradleys and shitty french light tanks. Not to mention atacms would be sent day 1 or ASAP.

It's been very interesting to see that neither side has done a lot of conventional night operations. Especially the 2nd army of the world having practically zero night fighting capability is crazy considering that America has equipped it's infantry at all levels with some night fighting capabilities for decades. Yes, yes they have SF forces with night vision but in america virtually every infantry unit has night vision, ir lasers, etc.

Not even virtually. Every single infantrymen in an infantry battalion has all that stuff.

I actually watched a video on this recently from task a purpose that covered both Russian and Chinese night fighting capabilities. Long story short, America still owns the night and will for some time. It’s an interesting watch, I’ll post it if I remember to when I get home.

Don’t forget that Biden and America are the real villains here for giving Ukrainians tools to fight back with

Ukr needs to hit russian ammo depots and radioelectronic warfare stations.
Otherwise little chances even to repel russian pressure....
