Royce Gracie on UK fighters

Jiu jitsu isn't the be all and end all of fighting though, people need to remeber that, saying that a country is ahead of another country in grappling is difficult, someone could say america is behind brazil, but what about russia, how many wrestling world champions do they produce, judo and sambo, its ignorance to ignore other countries grappling, just because they don't care about competing in the mundials.

Clearly he is being specific to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Much like if a Sambo guy was being interviewed and he said he felt America was 10 years behind in the Sambo game.

I'm with you that BJJ is not the be all end all but in the context of this interview specific to BJJ he is correct.

precisely, the Gracies think nobody in the UK knew how to throw up a triangle unless they gifted us BJJ

no he wasnt, he was referencing grappling in MMA, hence the refrences to strikes.

Well, Royce is famous for running affiliate programs and travel the world doing seminars every week.

He sees himself as the ambassador of GJJ and without him nobody would know about it.

Such attitude got him of him being such an important person in the UFC got him the ire from Matt Hughes. and we all know what was the result. Royce got a beating but still got paid more that Matt.

I'm amazed that people still take Helio's kids seriously when they are talking about something besides technique.

Absolutely amazed. There are so many other BJJ'er practitioners that are miles more relevant (and have more valid opinions) than Royce.

I knew what Sankaku Jime was long before I'd ever heard of Royce Gracie, so had many many many other people in the UK my point being BJJ and GJJ are not the only submission grappling arts out there, he should know, Saku tooled him without it.

tooled him? thats why they fought for like 30 minutes right??

He is right, UK is miles away in grappling terms from the US, that being bjj, wrestling, submission grappling or what ever kind of grappling there is in this world.

Dude. We all know what he said.

He only talked about himself and Rorion.

The champions query was with gannas.

Dude! Honestly, by your post and your nonsense question:
Have Rorion or Royce made any BB world champs?

It was clear that it was just hating on Royce and Rorion. What does that have to do with him saying the truth, that the UK is behind the U.S. in ground fighting because they went to America first? This is why the U.S. is ahead. If Rorion had gone to the UK in 1978 instead of the U.S. the UK would be ahead. What does that have to do with how many champions Rorion or Royce made? It's clear for anybody who follows BJJ how much of a damn Rorion or even Royce give to sports BJJ and chasing advantages.
I tell you why you said that. Just to hate. This is the trend. Hate on Gracies. Truth is all your BJJ coaches wouldn't be there if wasn't for the Gracies. If they are American they wouldn't know BJJ. If they are Brazilian they would still be in Brazil. Now that they showed the way, the mass has all immigrated to the U.S. and the world to make their money. But it's wrong for Rorion to make his money. Funny how that goes.
I disagree with Rorion's marketing tactics and with giving blue belts with video tests as much as the next guy, but credit needs to be given where it's due. Rorion's vision to bring BJJ out of Brazil is responsable for the BJJ boom worldwide. Rorion's vision to create the UFC is responsable for what would become MMA. And please spare from the Carley Gracie talk. He has done nothing for BJJ.
Would somebody else have done it if Rorion hand't? Maybe. Maybe at a much later date. But he was the one who did it and credit is due.
Royce is right. The U.S. is ahead because they went there first. This is what he meant and this is the truth!

P.S. I do not train at the Gracie academy or any of it's affiliates. I don not agree that BJJ should be trained for self-defense only. I'm not a member of Gracie University.
But just because I don't agree with some of their philosophies doesn't mean I have to hate on them or not give them the credit they have earned. BJJ is international because of Rorion, because of Royce, because of the Gracie family and they will remind you of that at any chance they get. Maybe more so because the world is trying to "forget" or ignore or even change that. This Gracie hate trend is ridiculous.

He meant ahead in ground fighting skills. While BJJ is not the only ground fighting style, it's clearly and well accepted as the most developed. Sambo or Judo are not as developed on ground as BJJ and obviously neither is wrestling or catch wrestling. Grappling and ground fighting is not the same. Not all grappling is ground. Sumo is considered grappling.

You know what's funny? Now that the cat is out of the bag everybody knew all the stuff already. But where was it before BJJ came along?

Didn't he specifically say "ground skills"? If so he's right. BJJ is not the only game in town but it is the most developed on the ground.

No he said fighters, not bjj. And its clear in fighting russian grappling would trump that of the US, as they have better judokas, wrestlers and sambo artists. Also they are better in k-1 and boxing, what he said was that america is second to brazil in grappling i say russia could beat both in grappling for fighting.

Being from the UK I agree, BJJ is still in it's infancy here. In Scotland there are probably less than ten (non Brazilian) black and brown belts here and most of them have travelled to Brazil or the U.S. to further their game.

When I started BJJ my instructer was a blue belt and there are still many clubs all over the country that are taught by blue and purple belts.

I'm very lucky to have a Brazilian black belt (who gave me my purple belt a few months back) only 20 mins away from where I live another class with 2 very good 4 stripe purple belts only 5 mins from my house.

lol at some of the folks from the UK taking this so personally. There is no denying the fact that Britain produces very few top levels grapplers at this point. They don't produce a lot of wrestlers, a lot of judoka, a lot of bjj experts, or a lot of ground-specialist mma guys. They might some day and of course there are exceptions now, but at the present time, arguing against this just makes you look overly emotional and irrational.
