Rory MacDonald – What Went Wrong?

You answered your own question.

Rory vs Lawler really took whatever enjoyment of fighting out of Rory.

I'm not sure Rory was ever fully invested in MMA in his heart, he was good at and it was a means to money. Earlier on his career he seemed to enjoy it much more than anywhere near his last few years in the sport. He seemed very uninterested in the sport after his UFC run. I think this was the driving factor of the UFC not wanting him anymore, they knew his heart really wasn't into MMA anymore. No too mention the UFC had a hell of a time getting Rory do anything extra in promoting himself or his fights.

Sharing the cage with Robbie Lawler especially for a extended period of time tends to change people

Robbie Lawler beat the dog out of him. Being on the opposite side of the beating can really mess a fighter up. I'm not saying Rory didn't have heart but not all hearts are created equally.

I'm pretty sure rory had some fights before he turned 18. Dude suffered the same fate as that karate kid Sage northcut, he jumped in the game to early and got an adult level ass whopping when still a kid. You just dont recover from getting son'd

He also started mma fighting super young, like before he was even 18 and I can only imagine the amount of damage he took growing up.

Maybe his body was just not up for the task. We all went to high school with dudes we thought were destined to be in the NBA, or were regular travis Brown athletes, but it turns out they peaked early. And their peak didnt last. And they werent genetically very lucky.

Ill go as far as to say a lot of it is unfortunately just a lottery of genetics. Doesnt help that they (the HS guys AND pro MMA fighters) dont take care of their bodies. If you think MMA fighters are collectively like the Diaz brothers... Or if you actually think the Diaz brothers were some kind of trailblazers and were doing right by their anatomy and physiology.

Then add in NOT utilizing chemistry. Then starting early. Like, everything thats "right moral wholesome and fair" is a big ass lie thats been fed to us by the people who are thriving but "cheating" their own rule sets!

He started fighting pro at 16 years old. Fell off after about 13 years of professional fighting. Is normal
