Rickson Gracie FAQ

Decent apologia. But no.

Didn't Helio Gracie call bullshit on the 400-0?

No. In an interview, Helio did say that he didn't consider Rickson as being 400-0, because he did not consider closed-door challenges to be professional fights. He went on to claim that, by that standard, he himself would have won over a thousand fights ( quite likely, considering how famous he was and the span of his career). Helio was probably the most popular Gracie champion, having fought over a dozen times in full stadiums, in the presence of national authorities. That is what he considered a record-worthy fight.

In short, he did not consider challenge fights something to call a record, but he did not dispute that Rickson did in fact win over 400 challenges without ever losing.

What does the 400-0 include?

Challenge fights and grappling competitions.

According to Helio, the number of fights is arrived at through toting up tournament matches, amateur fights, and training with little kids.

It is not "training with little kids" but "child's play", in other words, fights or matches that he didn't take seriously, such as street fights. Thus what I said is accurate.

I went to a free class at a BJJ school in Montreal a while back and the teacher is a Black Belt under Royler Gracie and he gave me a cool Rickson story. I asked him how good Rickson was. He then replied that Rickson was the Mario Lemieux of BJJ(In Canada, that is very high praise because Lemieux was perhaps the most gifted hockey player ever).

He said that he owns(or saw) a video of Rickson doing a 2 on 1 BJJ match against Royce and Royler when they were young(shortly after both younger brothers received their black belts). He quickly submitted Royler in the early seconds of the match and then had Royce in his guard. He said "Little brother, I am coming for your right ankle in 10 seconds" As he was counting down his 10 second time-limit, he transitioned to a heel hook as the clock expired.

Anyone ever heard this Rickson story? Some details might be a little off but it's still a pretty cool story that I heard from a BJJ Black Belt under Royler Gracie, if true of course. I think the fact that this person admits that his master got schooled adds credibility to it. Does anyone know what incident I am refering to?

P.S: This is one of my top 3 favorite Sherdog threads ever.

I find so strange a father put down his own son like the way Helio did...

You wouldn't be if you were more familiar with just how vain, unfortunately, Helio and his sons could/can be at times.

As for the Rickson story, Rickson's countdowns are a well known story, but I never heard that one specifically. I wouldn't be terribly surprised, since Royce has always been a below-average practitioner of BJJ ( no disrespect intended), and Royler is very small.

This past weekend Rickson was invited by Vinicius Campelo to give a lesson at his Alliance team,Akxe at Barra da Tijuca, Rio.
Rickson gave his 3 hour seminar on "invisible jiu-jitsu". Also present were Fabio Gurgel, Kyra Gracie, and Sylvio Behring.

Fabio Gurgel said, about the seminar , "See, these aren't details that we forget about. These are refinements that nobody even knows."

Wow lucky. I'd pretty much cut off my manhood to have a private with Rickson for 3 hours...

The General never hid his respect for Rickson. In terms of BJJ there is nobody who questions him, he is a unanimity, crossing over to any gym or affiliation. When it comes to BJJ, everybody from every gym would put their gi on a mudhole for Rickson not to dirty his boots.

DonkeyKong do you know if Rickson has any plans to do any more seminars in the US?

3hrs seminar with Rickson would be incredible. DonkeyKong do you know anyone who went to the seminar so they can shed some light on this "invisible jiujitsu"?
I'm sure someone has been to a rickson seminar on sherdog. I would love to know more about this

I'm sure Rickson intends to take this series of seminars worldwide.

The "invisible jiu jitsu" is not anything supernatural or exotic, quite the opposite, in his seminar Rickson revisits basic positions and techniques and shows minute details that improve them tenfold. Rickson is a strong believer in basic jiu jitsu.

In his seminar in Rio last year it was for 150 people, I think over one third of which were black belts.

In his seminar he demonstrates with almost everyone, since he can't roll with all of them, he makes sure to invite most if not all to demonstrate a position with him. For instance asking them to hold him down to show an escape from sidemount to the classic "lend me your arm" for a demonstration of his simplified, two step armbar.

Yep, Rickson has a special armbar technique. Who would have guessed. :)

Yeah, and I heard that, this one time, Jesus Christ Himself descended from Heaven to congratulate Rickson on being the baddest mofo on the planet, and then Rickson armbarred Him because he could.

It's true. It was all behind closed doors and stuff, but this guy who is related to Rickson told me he owned or saw a video of it, but didn't popularise it for totally inexplicable reasons.

well, I dont know if Rickson would release a private video of him destroying his close brothers for any reason as there is rarely footage on him rolling with them much less. Now get the hell out of here, your username is gay too

The sense that I got was that his jiu jitsu instruction was "invisible" because you couldn't see it in a book or watch it in a video/DVD. You had to feel it.

It reminds me of what he says in Choke:

"The most interesting aspect of jiu-jitsu is

In my opinion the most underrated Gracie is Royler winning the ADCC 3 times and the mundials 4 times. He trains at University JJ with Saulo and Xander thats the shit he stays loyal to his top students.
