Rickson Gracie FAQ

In my opinion the most underrated Gracie is Royler winning the ADCC 3 times and the mundials 4 times

Im not sure if these numbers/facts are correct, however Ive got no reason to doubt them. Quite impressive imo.

How is Royler underrated??

He is widely considered one of the most succesful BJJ competitor in the family and competed tons more than Rickson in both sports BJJ and MMA. Even fighting young guns in MMA at the age of 40. Everybody knows that...

"Tons more than Rickson"? Well he has 10 fights on his "official" Sherdog fight finder. Rickson has 11. Sport BJJ...Rickson competed plenty. Just because the Mundials and ADCC and the like weren't even invented until after Rickson was basically retired doesn't mean that the man didn't compete quite often. I think you could have stopped at "in the family."

Yeah maybe exaggerated a bit, I am aware that he competed more, because he competed longer than Rickson in sports BJJ, when there were more tournaments available.

Trust me, I'll be the LAST one to deminish Rickson's legend...

That's a good article man. I met Rickson and "trained" with him (to be more accurate, I was "educated" by him). Rickson is for real.

Here are some interview with Rickson that might be of interesting, from Japaneses and Brazilian magazines, between 2000 and 2005.

I went to a free class at a BJJ school in Montreal a while back and the teacher is a Black Belt under Royler Gracie and he gave me a cool Rickson story. I asked him how good Rickson was. He then replied that Rickson was the Mario Lemieux of BJJ(In Canada, that is very high praise because Lemieux was perhaps the most gifted hockey player ever).

He said that he owns(or saw) a video of Rickson doing a 2 on 1 BJJ match against Royce and Royler when they were young(shortly after both younger brothers received their black belts). He quickly submitted Royler in the early seconds of the match and then had Royce in his guard. He said "Little brother, I am coming for your right ankle in 10 seconds" As he was counting down his 10 second time-limit, he transitioned to a heel hook as the clock expired.

Anyone ever heard this Rickson story? Some details might be a little off but it's still a pretty cool story that I heard from a BJJ Black Belt under Royler Gracie, if true of course. I think the fact that this person admits that his master got schooled adds credibility to it. Does anyone know what incident I am refering to?

P.S: This is one of my top 3 favorite Sherdog threads ever.

Yes, Pedro Sauer told an almost identical story.

He also said something that really stuck.

this is not word for word, but something like:

"I became technical by learning how to tap. I would train with Helio, Royler...all of them. They would tap me out all the time. after I while, I started learning all of their moves by tapping out before they could catch me. After enough time of doing this, they could no longer tap me. except Rickson. In Rickson's case, I would just tap out early. because there was no way to stop him from tapping you."

Royler is underrated most peeps remember him tapping out 2 Eddie Bravo at the ADCC. All you ever here is about Rickson, Royce and Renzo very few know how good Royler was. I'm glad at least some know how great he actually was!!!

After watching Renzo Gracie Legacy it was hard 4 me to root 4 BJ but he looked awesome Saulo was giving Diego terrible advise I think Xande should have jumped in more often!!!

Is it true that Rolls' favorite technique was Uchimata? Sorry to rehash this thread, but Mikey told me to read it (don't know how I missed it) and this is one of the best threads of all time.

UPDATE: Rickson now officially wears the 8th rank coral belt.

He resisted for so long because he didn't like the color and also because it had a very strong "aging" meaning to it.

Ah, and those are also the colors of Flamengo soccer team, and I'm pretty sure he's Fluminense. Not a big deal but he did prefer to tell 150 people to move at a seminar from one picture location to another so the Flamengo symbol wouldn't be on the wall on the back of the pic. :P

He he. My favorite team (LDU) from Quito-Ecuador just beat Fluminense and won the South American club championship and got to celebrate inside Maracana Stadium! Sorry Fluminense.

If you ask me who's the best BJJ guy in MMA, not counting the world champions who just started ( Xande, Jacare and Roger), I would say BJ Penn.

But if you're asking who uses BJJ most effectively in MMA, then of course Demian Maia.

Funny, I would give the exact same answer, except if it were a few years ago, I would have thrown Nog's name in there.

When's the next Rickson seminar happening and where ? Also where is he planning to host the rest of his seminars (I'm guessing 9 more are left)?

DK, this thread is so good that I must write my first post in about 5 years and say excellent work.

thanks tragic dignity. that's a real compliment.

3dsmax, Rickson still hasn't published the schedule for his seminars, but I know for a fact that a tour of the US is planned.

cbtrn, I actually root for Fluminense! What an unfortunate outcome in that tournament, eh?

Drew Foster, I became curious about that now. I'll try and ask some people.

This is an onthemat.com interview by Gumby with Henry Akins. Henry was the 3rd American black belt under Rickson. Henry has probably trained with Rickson more than any American, and was the principal black belt instructor at Rickson's west LA academy for years. I trained under Henry and Rickson for several years and now train with Kron at the west LA school. This article is well worth reading and contains some good first hand intel on Rickson.
