Rickson Gracie FAQ

I liked this quote a lot:

"I think with Rickson he has always stuck to the philosophy which is really knowing how to use leverage and never use strength in his techniques. Always finding an easy way to do something. Making sure that a technique works with either gi or no gi and also making sure the technique is applicable in a fight. Also making sure that everyone can use the technique, not just a big strong guy or just a small skinny fast guy, but the technique has to work for everyone. He’s always trying to find a pure answer for any type of situation."

Also this quote sounds exactly like what Renner said on his interview:

"HENRY AKINS: It’s really interesting, the tournament game has gotten so big in Brazil, you see guys who are sponsored and are able to actually make some money from sponsors by competeing and being good. But what you see is that Jiu Jitsu has been transformed from what used to be a practical form of street self defense to more of a tournament game, a little like what happened to Tae Kwon Do. Things like jumping armlocks and flying triangles, things that you would never ever want to do in the street, you see as common practice in Jiu Jitsu tournaments. So I think it’s gone really really far away from it’s roots and what it was meant for, a practical form of street self defense. There are so many things in Jiu Jitsu tournaments where guys are doing things like pulling the lapel down and wrapping it around the guys arm and tying the guys up with it. What that means to me is that guys who are spending all this time training these techniques are basically completely ineffective when it comes to a real self defense situation."

Funny, I would give the exact same answer, except if it were a few years ago, I would have thrown Nog's name in there.

My top 5 BJJ guys in MMA..........Xande, Jacare, Maia, Galvao, and Werdum.........Did not add Roger and Drysdale because they have not made there official mma debuts yet althought Drysdale does have a few amateur mma fights. Marcelo does not seem real interested in resuming his mma career. Would like 2 know who ur top 5 bjj guys in mma are?

U can make an extremely strong argument that Filho, Arona and Big Nogi should be on that list.

hesitated to post in this thread--I didn't want to spoil it with my noobness, but just wanted to say I learned a lot readingn it and appreciate the TS' efforts.

I thought Roger fought Ron Waterman and armlocked him in Roger's MMA debut within the last 2 years... Right?

And plus, Roger choked out Yuki Kondo in his second MMA match.

p.s. DonkeyKong, thanks for this wonderful thread!

50% of this thread is information brought by other members. It is worth it to read through the whole thread because many people joined in , adding information about Carlos, Carlson, Rolls, different schools, BJJ stories, and Rickson stories.

here is the quote from fabio in graciemag:

If you could point out the five greatest passers in jiu jitsu history who would they be, yourself excluded? Can you point out the qualities of each of them?

In the First place, Rickson Gracie, who has his main quality the fact he perceives each adversary's point of discomfort and doesn't let him get out of this point ever.

Ur right my Bad he beat waterman in 2006 and Kondo in 2008 he just doesnt seem to interested in MMA his still focused on grappling tournaments. I would like to see the Holy Trinity dominate MMA like they did the grappling circuit. So far Jacare is the only one stepping up.

Filho and Arona definitely. Filho is a beast.

I really hope Filho gets his depression under control his ground game is awesome at one time I picked him 2 dethrone Anderson Silva at 185lb his been fighting at over 200lbs lately.

regarding the breathing techniques, at a rickson seminar he spent about a half an hour just talking about breathing, he did the stomach thing, it was the best part of the seminar, even better than all the bjj techniques he showed

Roger has never been submitted in the Black Belt, has only lost on points by minimal margins, is undefeated in his weight category, has 8 mundial black belt titles, and is has an ADCC weight AND absolute title.

I'd say if he keeps this up, he will surpass anyone before him.

I thought Marcelo beat him by verbal submission.

EDIT: nevermind pretty sure that's Rolles I am thinking of

I'm sure Rickson intends to take this series of seminars worldwide.

The "invisible jiu jitsu" is not anything supernatural or exotic, quite the opposite, in his seminar Rickson revisits basic positions and techniques and shows minute details that improve them tenfold. Rickson is a strong believer in basic jiu jitsu.

In his seminar in Rio last year it was for 150 people, I think over one third of which were black belts.

In his seminar he demonstrates with almost everyone, since he can't roll with all of them, he makes sure to invite most if not all to demonstrate a position with him. For instance asking them to hold him down to show an escape from sidemount to the classic "lend me your arm" for a demonstration of his simplified, two step armbar.

Yep, Rickson has a special armbar technique. Who would have guessed. :)

Wrong also, Roger has always expressed interested in mma, and is fighting soon waiting for his strikeforce debut this year.

Undefeated still though
