Rickson Gracie FAQ

Just read through your post, TS, and most of the ensuing comments from yourself. Very well done.

slow day at work; just read 1-page 41 and found it very insightful. thanks TS and to all of the contributors!

i have a question, i saw a bas rutten fight where he called rickson out, did anything ever come of that? i dont think they ever fought right?

cool dude... Thanks for the read. I learned a bit. I didnt know his son died. I appreciate it.

Find a source, and then put on wiki

yeah and Rickson would now officially be 401-0. Nothing like being just another stat.

It was humbling. In surfing you tend to get people that mouth off in the water to people that they wouldn't say anything to on land. I usually will say something if someone burns me on purpose, but Rickson just seemed like someone I should not mess with. I wonder who he was surfing with that day...

The thing is everyone looks back now and goes "Bas called him out! And Rickson never stepped up!!" Well, Rickson was basically retired for YEARS when Bas "called him out." And at the time Bas didn't even have the name that Rickson did in Japan. He was a Pancrase fighter who no one had really heard of at the time outside of the Pancrase crowd. (Everyone here will say, "BS! Bas was the man! He would have killed Rickson!!") But AT THE TIME, Bas was an up and comer and he had lost to BOTH Shamrocks AND Funaki. Rickson came out of retirement to fight Takada and started a little organization called PRIDE. He also fought him a year later (and beat him again.) And fought once more against Funaki in 2000. When he fought Funaki he was ALREADY 42 (or 41?) But he was still "Rickson Gracie" so everyone called him out. No, him and Bas never fought. But I actually would have put money on a "past his prime" Rickson against Bas at that time. Just my opinion though.

In the late 90's before i knew who he was, Rickson Gracie dropped in on me while surfing Upper Trestles, a surf spot in San Clemente California. I've been surfing for over 25 years, used to surf in competitions and consider myself well above average skill wise. In surfing, the surfer that is the closest to the breaking part of a wave has priority on that wave, anyone attempting to catch the wave in front of that surfer is "dropping in" which is an act of disrespect. Brazilians are well known in the surfing world for dropping in. It doesn't seem like they are trying to disrespect people, just seems like they are so excited to surf and get a little too aggressive.

Any ways, paddling back out to the lineup after surfing BEHIND Rickson for a while, I had it in my mind i was gonna call this guy out, maybe invite him to the beach if he didn't apologize for this blatant disrespect. I made it back to the lineup and made eye contact with Rickson, just to let him know i didnt appreciate him taking my wave. Thats when i decided to get over it real quick. Just something about the guy told me he was a bad ass. I remember thinking he had a big head and neck. Didn't realize it was him until a year later, when i accompanied a friend of mine to his first jiujitsu competition and saw Rickson there. Needless to say i was glad i didnt get myself choked out on the beach at Trestles that day.

Definitely one of the things i love about jiujitsu-everyone surfs!

Dont how i missed this story, but thats fucking hilarious. You were touched by God that day my friend. Lol..

Also, Trestles is legendary. Im a shitty surfer, but ive made my pilgrimage. :D

This is what I got out of those comments in choke also.

Shane Rice told me exactly what Donkey Kong described. The comments in Choke about point zero refer to a mindset of, don't get hurt, don't lose, win; in that order.

That is what makes Ju Jitsu unstoppable, that is why you might have to fight 3 hours (Helio).
