Rickson Gracie FAQ

Nakai was trained by Kanae Hirata even before he started watching BJJ intructionals. Hirata is a almost legendary newaza specialist, uke to Kimura himself, and, acording to Nakai, the best ground fighter he ever rolled with, including Rickson.

That said, oh wise TS, can you shed a light on the cause of the split between Jorge Gracie and his brothers, and his fight with Pedro Hemeterio? Anything about Jorge really

The Carlson split was indeed because of money but it wasn't a split per se. He just opened his own gym. There were many differences, however. The Gracie Academy only did privates, and Carlson did collective classes for lower prices. His gym became very popular very fast.

He was also extremely competitive and encouraged his fighters to win in all competitions, even against students of his seniors in the family. That created the resentment that fueled the rivalry.

Lastly , Carlson had a serious, serious gambling problem that lasted throughout his life: cockfighting. That was the major factor behind his financial interest into the new gym
 
Royler's gym is Gracie Humaita, a real stable of champions, responsible for greats like Saulo and Xande Ribeiro and Vinny Magalhaes. It did, like the Gracie Academy in Torrance, have Helio's full blessing, and taught fighting as well as self-defense.

Carlson used to train his team to defeat the Gracies but only in BJJ and never in MMA.
 
By all competitions I mean BJJ. I dont know about MMA. Id have to go check.
 
I got a fun Rickson tidbit out of my instructor who came over for Thanksgiving tonight (Canada, yo.)

He said that when Rickson was competing in tournaments, people in the audience would begin counting backwards from 10 in unison and most times Rickson would finish his opponents before the countdown ended.

Penao is a 6th degree BB under Carlson, so he would have been around to see this in persona and has nothing really to gain from propagating myths about Rickson. He said Rickson was the best, period.

He also told me he awarded Paulo Filho his yellow belt back when PF was just a chubby little kid. There was some other interesting stuff, but some of it seemed a little sensitive and I wouldn't want to misquote him based on his poor english or my abysmal portuguese.
 
to also add.. if you buy his action figures from ebay, then it boosts your sex life ten fold. i swear to this and currently own 2.

Can you talk about the philosophical diffrences between Carlson GJJ and Helio GJJ. and also any info on the time Carlson took a swing at Vitor from the stands after one of Vitors loses. (this was well after the Vitor/Carlson split).

Also, what was the rest of the brothers take on Helio's version (suited for a weaker, frailer man) and what they were taught/teaching.
 
Oh and if the Gracies learned JJ and then changed it a bit to fit there version of self defense i wonder why they continued to use the gi? I mean if GJJ is an art soley used for self defense, i would think they would do away with the gi's (people don't walk around in gi's) and transform the moves to no gi.

Jackets, heavy clothing, etc.. The same principles still apply. Gi training has many benefits I won't get into in this thread.
 
Also, why did some of the Gracies start using names that started with K instead of the traditional R used for so many generations?

From some Carlson's interviews but TS could clarify:

Helio was 100% techniques. Carlson agreed with Helio philosophy. However, Carlson said that if both fighters have the same level of knowledge/techniques, then the stronger ones would win. So strengh played an important part in Calson JJ and his fighters were known for never playing guard.

Therefore, Carlson had a bunch of meatheads training under him in order to defeat the other Gracie clubs at BJJ.

Carlson accused Vitor to throw the fight vs Sakubara for money. Carlson accused Vitor of living it large i.e. driving/owning an expensive car after his loss knowing that he could not afford it with the money that Pride paid him to fight. That was his reasoning!

I can see a move towards NOGI by the younger gracies but I doubt that old cavalry will ever leave the GI.

I mean the old rivalry between Luta Livre and GJJ was based on the GI afterall!

The Gi may have been the instrument, but the rivalry was about economics.

I guess it is always about money. The gracie clan taught JJ for a living.

It was about who has the best MA.
If Luta Livre won, then it proved that they were better that GJJ.
And that were I see the GI dilemma.

I read an interview of Wanderlei Silva. His first vale tudo fight was against a capoeira club which wanted to prove that they were better that Chute Box. Rafael did not want Wanderlei to fight because he was too young but Wanderlei got his wish after his teamate was injured therefore could not fight. I think Wanderli was like 17.
