Rich guy hires homeless people to wait in line for iPhones..

The unidentified reseller had offered $40 to each hired hand who bought an iPhone for him, which he bragged about to others in the line of about 200 people, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported. When they learned of the scheme, store personnel stopped selling the latest iPhone models to the homeless stand-ins.

An agitated crowd surrounded the man when he announced he wouldn't pay anyone who had not bought a phone, and police officers had to escort him away — several new models in hand — for his protection about 9 a.m., Lt. Jason Clawson said.

BTW, those damn gold iphones are going for $1000 - $1500. If I knew they were going to be that much, I would've lined up myself overnight. Easy profit of at least $400-$1000 for 12 hours of boredom.

Is this guy a douche for recruiting bums to get his phones?

It's certainly douchey to brag about it. Pretty clever to get a bunch of iphones and resell for profit though.

Similar to the rich people who hire disabled folk to cut in line at Disneyland.

This is how sneakerheads operate on almost any release that isn't a raffle. The Undefeated store on La Brea (boutique sneaker store) got 14 pairs of a kick going for $400-$500 a pop online. My buddy and his partner cop'd 11 of the pairs using homeless/stand-ins.

stiffing some of the workers wasn't a nice thing to do, but he did give people an opportunity to "earn" some money.

They didn't do their jobs.
That's what happens when you think you're about to get easy money.

so wait.

they're actually earning the money, and people have a problem with it?

i have more of a problem with bums standing on the side of a road with a sign, and people just roll up and give them cash.

You would be pissed if you waited on line all night just to find out you won't get a phone because some rich guy and his 30 homeless standins got the last of the bunch. The guy also was an asshole because once the store stopped selling the phones to the homeless he told them he won't pay them since they didn't get him a phone. Some of these homeless people waited all night and didn't get paid.

They're homeless people.
I don't think they had other "big plans" unless you mean standing around somewhere else.
Did they sign a contract? Get any guarantee in writing?
nope.

This guy merely exploited the system set up to take your money.
I think he's a hero.

what difference does it make if its 30 random people ahead of you, or 30 bums some dude paid?

dont hate the player, hate the game.

They could've been sleeping or drinking with their crew under the bridge. They should've stepped up and beat down your hero.

There's already a website where you can hire people to stand in line for you. This guy just opted to go the cheaper route.
