Karl is a very good LHW probably top 20 in the world with some of the best grappling in the division too. He had Jiri in a whole lot of trouble.

Now this was 4 1/2 years ago but Jiri has been fighting a lot of strikers since then and his bottom game and TDD haven't been tested much. Reyes who was rocked bad got him down but his grappling is shit so it didn't matter and Jiri got back up. Glover's threat there opens up his hooks too like when he hurt Jan before getting him down.

If Glover gets on top of Jiri he has one of the best top games ever @ LHW and Jiri will get finished IMO. Or beaten up so bad he's a corpse in there like Smith was after the beating he took.

"But Jiri is so athletic" some Shertards will say. Jiri is good and will quite possibly beat old man Glover, but it's kind of hard getting excited when "elite" LHWs fight in 2022 when you know the "elite" are top 5-10 a couple of years ago. Rooting for Glover so we can get rid of all the Jiri threads.

It's always interesting to me when the grappler is controlling on the ground, opponent finds is way up, and they both know the grappler is fucked lol

On a scale of 1 to Conor v Mendez, this one is solidly a 9.

Ya, if Glover gets him down it's gonna get ugly fast. I think everyone here is aware of this.

I watched that fight somewhat recently and I think you made some excellent points.

Even though it was almost 5 years ago we haven't seen Jiri fight other pressure wrestlers (maybe Brandon Halsey?).

His TDD is definitely questionable since he loves to come in blitzing with non-stop aggression and endless combinations, if the opponents make the mistake of shelling up to try and find a counter he can just overwhelm them with power/variety and odd timing and set-ups.

I think the biggest factor in this fight though will be the speed; Jiri is so much faster than Jan. Even though he won I remember Glover just looking old and slow until he got to those dominant grappling positions and Jan was really hesitant early and got taken down immediately. It's likely going to be a one round fight, Jiri will blitz Glover and KO him or he'll do something stupid and get taken down and grapple-raped/subbed.

Though there is always the chance Jiri could just hit some crazy reversals and survive on pure youth/vigor. Nikita Krylov almost subbed Glover and survived a brutal three-round war and a lot of it wasn't great technique but just youthful tenacity/aggression/explosiveness.

Glover is so good on top. He's a slower, much more methodical Charles Oliveira on top. He's really got great grappling cardio, too. His takedowns and passing only come more easily as the fight goes on, as his opponent's bjj prowess dissipates.

Jiri will have his chance in the first few minutes. If he doesn't win it on athleticism, physicality, and health in the first few minutes, he's going to lose this fight. Jiri can be very Sloppy standing, and Glover is almost always very tight defensively and always ready to throw a short hook or two. I don't envision Glover just outstriking Jiri from the opening bell because he's more technically sound; I think it's likely to pay off over time, though. I have no doubts that Glover will first have to go through hell with Jiri on the feet. He's gonna be moving with fresh legs, ready to spinning elbow Glover unconscious. He fights like a combination of Gus and Rumble, (and Yair Rodriguez).

Jiri was nearly KO'd twice during some scrambles and exchanges with Dominic. But his recovery is... insane. I don't think I've seen anyone recovery like that, but that also kind of worries me about future opponents.

I mean yeah, its the classic striker vs grappler fight, if Glover gets him down he has a way of finishing people, even after being hurt himself. In like 3 of his 5 wins leading up to the belt he was rocked in the first round and then mounted a comeback. Jiri has to put him all the way out to win, like Rumble did. All these BJJ guys are hard to TKO, like Oliviera, guys dont even want to follow him to the ground when he's hurt because it's still a bad place to be with a BJJ expert. Glover is the same way, you need to starch him or else he can just reverse you and then he's in top control.

Also in LHW.. most of Paul Craigs wins were submissions off his back after guys dropped him. BJJ doesn't get enough credit as a form of striking defense and means of controlling where the fight will take place. Being a black belt and fighting lesser grapplers means you can have a standing 8 count any time you want it by just dropping to your back, aka the Werdum Flop, we've seen Oliviera using this in his latest fights.

i don't know why everyone seems to count Glover out on the feet. his left hook is still good and he has good timing. Jiri's defense is built of rhythmic head movement instead of reactive.

Something people seem to overlook when thinking about jiri vs glover. Anthony smith and Jan r definitely better on the ground than jiri and you seen what happened to them
By "people" do you mean nobody?

lol

Maybe I shouldn't say that. I'm sure after months of talking about it, one or two fans still thought Justin Gaethje had a good chance if his fight hit the ground against Oliveira.

Well, same thing here.
