Rumored Report: UFC 317 Topuria-Oliveira flops, Sold less than Poirier-Holloway for BMF

2 homegrown/somewhat household name Americans beat out 2 foreigners, okay

Not that PPV buys matter to me but I thought this was interesting. Luke Thomas says trustworthy insiders told him Topuria-Oliveira sold way worse than expected and in fact less than Poirier-Holloway for the BMF title.

What do yall think? Do you believe this and was this the final nail in the coffin for PPVs? To me Topurias starpower always felt a bit overinflated and that became increasingly obvious when he magically gained a million Instagram followers in less than a day on some random day leading up to the fight when nothing noteworthy even happened.

Well nobody thought Charles had a chance.

Conor McGregor's rise to the title was unlike anything in the UFC, ever. The interviews and press conferences he did were massive. He also beat some real dudes to make his run, Holloway, Siver, Brandao, Mendes. Its hard to compare, Ilia has not been promoted half as much as McGregor was and McGregor hardly needed the help. But, Conor also had major catalysts like Diaz and Khabib, Ilia hasn't anyone like that so far. Plus, PPV is dying, they were offering major boxing promotions 1/20th what they did the UFC to get them on streaming platforms...PPVs aren't what they used to be and will never be again.
Yup I was there. Im literally among the biggest Conor marks on this site lol and have been since he debuted in 2013. I did see some of his Cage Wariiors fights but I began paying more attention when he came to the ufc.

Its a compilation of many things of how one becomes a star and Conor had pretty much it all.

People actually give a shit about Poirier and Holloway, been watching them fight for over a decade.

Oliveira too but people didn't think he would win.

Ppv numbers only really mattered when Conor was fighting

Seeing how ppv is dead now, who cares

I'm not surprised. It was pretty obvious that Jon Jones was the only reliable PPV star they had left.

It doesn't help that Ilia only fights every 9 months. Conor was active, Ronda was actice, Izzy was active, Poatan was active, etc

While some people will cite Anderson Silva being a big PPV star, I think you're right.

I also think the UFC is probably very concerned about the number of Russian/Caucuses fighters, because they are not popular. Khabib only sold 350k PPVs at his best when his opponent wasn't the one drawing viewers (Ferguson vs Gaethje sold more than Khabib vs Gaethje).

American and European fans just aren't interesting in watching a UFC filled with these fighters. This is a big problem.

More proof Topuria will never be a star. Idc how popular he is in Spain. It's not a lucrative market for UFC

Yeah?
Two foreign based fighters in a title fight for a belt where the champ just vacated, where arguably either guy shouldn’t have been in the fight to begin with?
As opposed to two longtime fan favorites in a rematch of an exciting war, as well as a retirement fight.

Kind of easy to explain

Wouldn't be the most shocking thing since I'm pretty sure the largest parts of both men's fanbases (Spain and Brazil) do not have the PPV model.

I know that's the case for Brazil and the rest of SA, don't know if it's the same in Spain but I wouldn't be surprised.

Yep, their value is in their home countries, the tv deals, sponsorship and building out the sport does alot for UFC. So they shouldn't be measured with the ppv scale. They both have really nice houses so whatever they did abroad for UFC must be good enough to pay for such fancy houses.

I just don't see how those who bought Dustin vs. Max didn't buy Olivera vs. Topuria.

500k ppv is a good number nowadays. If they expected a million buys you better have him fight islam and then have another banger co main and a stacked card. Million ppv buys are basically dead. I would be shocked if canelo crawford does a mil.
