Remind me again why is ground knees illegal?

Because the UFC's arbitrary ruleset has been the litmus for American MMA for decades now.

Fuck that, give us knees and soccer kicks.

This is FIGHTING, not the fucking NBA.

The UFC doesn't set the rules, its the prize fighting commission of the state (or province if its in Canada, not sure in other countries). Those commissions are run by political appointees, meaning the rules are set by politicians. Those politicians are mainly worried about votes, so anything that looks bad (and MMA was banned in a lot of places initially because of things that looked bad -- and one American presidential candidate (McCain) wanted MMA federally banned) is illegal. There's nothing Dana and the UFC can do about the rules.

Human fighting is done with weapons, and has been for a couple of hundred thousand years. With weapons we're top of the food chain, unarmed we're food for just about every big carnivore out there. Voluntarily fighting without weapons for humans is sport -- we're very bad at it and always use weapons for serious fighting (though it'd be fun to see two countries sending unarmed soldiers against each other it just doesn't happen, everyone uses weapons).

Convince the general public that knees and soccer kicks are okay and then the politicians will change MMA rules. Without that they're going to stay banned, no matter how much the niche group who consider themselves MMA fans (about a couple million people in a country of 330 million is a very small group) and the UFC beg to allow them.
