Remember when Miguel Torres was considered a GOAT

lets be honest

if you were watching his run back when it happened you'd have thought he was a GOAT

Torres had a handful of UFC fights, though.

Yes he did but was Rogan really into him after he had suffered some bad losses? I'm not quite sure since I haven't rewatched any of his fights.
...Actually I wouldn't be surprised at all if he was

I feel most had Torres over Mighty Mouse in their ufc fight. Funny how different directions can two careers head after a bad decision.
The real career altering fight involving DJ was the original match against McCall and how the commission fucked it up.

His chin couldn't Bowles' and MacDonald's punches, and the UFC was looking for any reason to cut him after his rape joke.

Before Cruz. Before Faber. There was Miguel Torres. He was the first real force at BW. What happened? Just didn't evolve? Game just passed him up? It's sad how forgotten Torres is. Under appreciated legend of BW IMO

I was a big fan not as much as Mir but whatever that is a whole other lever. Do you remember when they fake cut him for making that rape joke? lmfao

I remember seeing him and being in ahh about how much of a complete fighter he was. I think he owns a gym in chi town

he's overrated
four title fight wins in WEC over meh guys
couldn't even beat a natural flyweight
his first 33 fights are against cab drivers

but i love torres because he is on the receiving end of one of the most soul-stealing KOs in MMA history

Torres was relatively well rounded in an era of specialists. He could beat strikers on the ground and outstrike grapplers. When he started to face equally well rounded fighters who had physical advantages over him, he started to look mortal. That's really the long and short of it.

Really just the early face of an at the time underdeveloped division.
He had awesome fights in WEC

That said, I thought he got hosed vs DJ in UFC so he couldn’t have been that out of his league once more talent started to appear at 135

Just goes to show there's no such thing

I have shit talked Torres before, and his record is absurdly inflated with cans of soup, but he definitely helped derail his own career outside of the cage. He had lucrative sponsorships in the early days, but he wasted much of his time and money on bullshit. There is a short documentary on him, don't remember the name. He obviously victimizes himself but after his rape tweet he refused to play ball to get back in the fold with the UFC. Hes very bitter about it even today, which hampers any meaningful attempt at a comeback. He was supposed to fight on the regional circuit in 2018 but I don't think he ever did. I don't care about his tweet, but if your boss does there's a problem. And since he has a gym it's even harder for him to be excommunicated and on the outside. Zero publicity. None of the networks. No friends.

He changed camps too, after joining the UFC, and it didn't really help.

When he lost to Marlon Moraes in WSOF was when people really gave up on him. We didn't know how good Marlon was yet.

Dude just made a joke from Workaholics, all of a sudden he’s a monster. Talked about it a bit with him during International Fight Week. He was a chill and funny guy, hell of a fighter, sucks it went down hill.

It was from "It's always Sunny in Philadeplphia", but I agree. It was taken out of context and blown way out of proportion.

Yep, back in the good ol' WEC days, it was all about Faber (FW) and Torres (BW)... until Aldo and a few others like Cruz showed up.

Everyone shits on Miguel because he was so hyped at he time, but his career ages a little better when you consider:

He's had 55 pro fights and only 9 losses, Everybody always makes it sound like he fell off a cliff, and his career really did, but it's not the catastrophic fall people make it out to be, at least he got out before his losses became clinical.

To give some perspective, If BJ loses to Guida, he'll have tied Torres' total losses in just his last 11 fights.

Brian Bowels happened!

Then meth (or something like that) happened to Brian "Mini Wahlberg" Bowles (not Bowels!). I wonder if he got out of prison?

As for guys like Torres and Bowles, the BW division was in a quickly evolving state back then--just like general NHB/MMA was in the 1990s or WMMA was in the Carano-then-Rousey days. It's really hard to stay on top for long in times like that. Aldo (at FW) was the longest lasting but eventually met his fate at the ripe age of like 31. And while I hate to say it, Cyborg and her PEDs reigned in the women's division for a very long time....she beat Gina in like 2009.

I still remember my jaw dropping to the floor when Bowles KO'd Torres. Man it's rare and sad to see things go downhill so quickly for a guy. Torres went from being in the top 5 p4p conversation to a prelim fighter within 4 fights.

Should still be considered one of the best at that weight.

What happened? He got old, and the wars caught up with him. Especially at the lighter weights, this is a young man’s sport. The prime years are in their 20’s. Once they hit 30, it’s downhill from there, especially with so many fights.

You guys act like today’s top fighters will be that way forever. But it will happen to them as well.
