Media Reinier de Ridder issues statement on recent KO loss

I like Reinier but fucking hell that was a wakeup call. There's weight classes for a reason. He had no business attempting to go up to HW against a juggernaut like Malykhin. No business whatsoever.
Everyone in ONE wants to be the first to have the Triple Champ feat on their resume. Being double champ just isn't as impressive as it was five years ago. I figure Malykhin was RDR's ticket to a HW championship fight. Unfortunately, the size differential is too big for any MMA fighter to overcome in a major MMA org.

Also had a God-awful gameplan and no Plan B. I honestly didn't see a path to victory in the fight.

Believe it or not, they actually fought at Light Heavyweight for the World Championship and Malykhin actually cut weight to compete for Ridders title. So now Ridder is only the Middleweight Champion and Malykhin is Undisputed Light Heavyweight Champion and Interim Heavyweight Champion. Also worth noting that ONE's weight classes are all one weight up from the normal MMA weight classes due to their hydration testing, yet they retain the same name. So their Middleweight division is actually fought at 205lbs, their Light Heavyweight is fought at 225lbs (this fight), and then Heavyweight is 265 limit. (welterweight is 185, Lightweight 170, etc.)

Yeah. I honestly think him or his camp neglected the fact that Anatoly was a national level wrestler in Russia. I think they either didn’t account for that or were overconfident in RDR’s ability to take him down.

There was kind of an “ohh shit” moment when RDR realised he couldn’t take Anatoly down and just kinda froze.

He didn't. They fought for the LHW title which he was the defending champion.
