Recent Gilbert Melendez Comments

Yup. Also he said Cain should have tested JDS's cardio cause it was questionable. It just further proves what I think, no fighter is above the UFC brand. Thats why Dana will build up and tear down any fighter he wishes. I guarantee that if Chuck would have went to another rival org and finished his career, Dana would have been blasting the shit out of him.

Dana just says what he honestly thinks. I like it. Chuck's a great example. Dana could've still sold Chuck fights, he could've talked about how Chuck was beating Rich and had his arm broken before the KO, that Chuck's still a top fighter, and he could've sold a couple more big PPVs with Chuck.

But that's not what he said and did. What he said was: "Chuck's done." And he retired him. That's proof right there that Dana is just being honest, and when he questions one guy's abilities he's saying what we're all thinking. Also, when he praises one guy, that doesn't really mean he's saying anything towards that guy's opponent. I think Gil is reading way to much into Dana's (entirely justified) praise of Diego. Especially when you praise a guy's toughness, aren't you just acknowledging that the other guy gave him a beating? I mean does Dana even have to say Gil gave Diego a beating? Everyone already knows.

GTFO...

Melendez shouldn't have being fighting Diego in the first place!

Let Diego get 3 or 4 wins, then maybe.

Diego was a huge underdog going into the fight. He ended up finding a way to make a fight out of it in the end. Melendez did what was expected of him, Diego the unexpected. Same reason why people went nuts for Gus despite losing.

Diego is the man and the bigger draw. I still don't think the casual fan knows much about Gil. I really don't want to see Gil vs Diego again. Diego puts on exciting fights most of the time, but Gil seemed to be out of his league on that night.

You cant compare the close Gus/Jones fight to the one sided beating Melendez put on Diego.

The only thing that prevented everyone from seeing that it was a completely one-sided rout was the uppercut in the third and that was thirty seconds out of fifteen minutes that didn't involve Melendez beating the shit out of Sanchez. It was a fun fight but there are way bigger and more relevant challenges for Melendez out there.

World War?

Yeah, if Diego was Germany and didn't realize how badly he got beat the first time...
oh wait.

No rematch needed. Melendez should fight a fellow top 5 LW next.

I think Dana was pushing fighters to stand up and take shots more but for Diego that's fine but for other guys it's more methodical or if you lack striking skill sub guys all day.

Diego didn't deserve to fight Gil the first time and now they're talking rematch? It must be tough to work for a company that so blatantly plays favorites.

Diego was close to finish Gil in the third with that beautiful uppercut. Without that third round the match wouldn't have been competitive at all.

Diego showed true heart and gave 0 fucks and has been in the UFC 12x longer then Gil, went 19-0 and fought BJ for the title, before this fight he already got fight of the year for the Guida fight. WAR Diego.

He shouldn't have to fight Diego again. The man doesn't get enough respect and smashing Diego again won't do much for his career. He has to be one of the most underrated fighters in the UFC.

Wow they are seriously considering a rematch here? Diego is off the reservation and so is Joe Silva if he puts this together. It's a complete waste of Gil's time.

Well I wouldn't call it a complete waste of Gil's time. First of all he will get to headline an event with it which means big money/big attention. Second he just had a shot at the belt and he isn't going to get a new one this quick so he needs to be out there fighting someone. While Diego may not be a top contender he is a top name as far as fan recognition and so this means Gilbert gets attention as well , hopefully building his marketability and fan base as well (especially if they put on another great show). Gilbert may be a top 10 LW (well not may be, he is) but still as far as the average UFC fan goes he is not a big name. Heneeds fights like these to build up his name more to these casual fans, so selling him in big fights is more profitable for everyone involved. And I will agree he did win the fight fairly easily but believe me, he goes in there in a 5rd fight and the odds even up a tiny bit. Diego as punch drunk as he seems to be getting does keep getting stronger the longer a fight goes...somehow.

one sided? lol what?

diego had his back in the first round, got a takedown, very very nearly almost finished him with body kicks. round 1 could have gone to diego easily, and of course round 3 almost knocked him out so he had that round nobody would argue that.

besides in a 5 round fight diego would easily easily finish gilbert.

and wtf does he mean only diego got praise for that fight? dana white said AFTERWARDS that fight that was terrible for tj grant, and that gilbert would likely skip past him for a title shot which is completely asinine to think about.

put the beer down gil.

Oh please, this was an easy win. Pointless to have a rematch. Diego was over matched. Yes, the guy has heart and a good chin, but he's not on the same level. They should have done the first fight in mexico city if that was the goal.
