Oooo going to the 50s to make your argument. I respect it. I liked both films (Shane & Searchers) but the 60s is where all the great westerns are. I would even argue The Shootist is John Wayne's best film, at least it's my favourite.

People can say it's their favorite or even think it's the best, that's fine, but for me it missed the mark and I like it even less when I rewatch it.

Just give me the scene where Kurt's character meets Billy Bob and all of Val's scenes and I'm good with that.

Agreed that Val is what makes it great.

There are definitely spots in the movie that aren't perfect and kinda cheesy... but I see it like a baby: you love it, even if it's a little retarded

Lol hahaha and I respect that. I don't hate it but any means, I like it and still rate it an 8 which is great in my books, I just feel it gets a little too much respect and gets rated way too highly for me.

But Val's performance should be mentioned among the best of all time, not just Westerns.

A scene that often confuses me is when Bill Paxton's character leaves angry and mad looking to get revenge after Sam was shot, and then in the next scene he's playing pool lol

Fuck yeah. The Shootist was absolutely one Wayne's best. It's the movie he won an Oscar for, and though it was likely an appreciation award for his entire career and likely last film, it was still well deserved.

The perfection of Shane that separates it from a lot of other westerns is Shane is a gunslinger who never wants to use his guns again. Seeing him get pushed around, drinks splashed on his face, watching his friends and adopted family get pushed around, as an audience member all you want is for Shane to pull his guns and mow every single one of those motherfuckers down. But the moment he does, it's over. Even if he wins, he still loses.

He was the youngest brother. Quick to get heated, but easy enough to cool off after a couple games of billiards.

I don't think you'll find many disagreeing with those points. The romance sub-plot is a momentum killer and feels like filler, and that scene in the river is pure cringe. That said, are they really such egregious flaws, that it hurts the overall movie to any significant degree? I don't think so.

Also, I gotta say that Micheal Biehn's performance always gets forgotten about, or understated. A perfect yin to Kilmer's yang. Much like Kilmer, Biehn isn't known as a truly great actor, but he is so fucking good as Johnny Ringo in this, and steals every scene he's in.

Tombstone is in my top 10 westerns, I think it has one of the best casts in any western, it has the best performance, it's a lot fun but I feel it gets a bit overrated by some, which is fine, I just wanna put in my 2 cents.

I just watched the scene where Wyatt walks forward again and it's just laughable to me. I just don't like how the main villain and his men can't shoot a walking target coming right at them. It made them look incredibly weak.

I really should google this shit sometimes. I almost always post shit from memory. But it didn't work this time. How embarrassing. The way I just said it so matter of factly, too. What a dipshit.
 
It's a great movie. It's lacking some depth to keep it from being in the top tier of film. Solid 7-8/10 .

The Shootout at Iron Springs is a confirmed historical fact. In spite of walking out into heavy fire, Earp wasn't hit a single time, although he later discovered several bullet holes in his coat. In fact, Earp never sustained a single GSW during his entire career.

Sometimes, real life really is stranger than fiction:)

And that's fine. But it was still poorly executed in the film. It made the villain and his crew look incredibly weak when they were viewed as strong and dangerous through out the film. I watched it again today and I still don't like it.
 
9/10. Great movie, but I personally would put Open Range a smidge ahead.

Something more could have been done to have some near misses from Curly Bill and up the threat. Tombstone is a lot of fun but there are spots here and there where improvements are possible.
