Eh it's good at best. One of my least fav Clint westerns. Its just a copy/tribute of Shane which is the superior film. I do like Pale Rider but I could name 7 Clint westerns that are superior.

The obvious stuffed animal as the dead dog is on the same level as the fake baby in American sniper.

Once upon a time in the west is the only option you picked that could be a half cocked love story. The rest are not.

I got a minute and reread my post and your question and stumped myself, now I think I see where I misspoke.
I think half cocked plot lines involving women and romance hurt western and war movies. The love at first sight motivation, the random meeting with beautiful(clean) women in the west or behind enemy lines in war seem like poor attempts to entertain viewers. Maybe because nudity doesn't carry the weight it used to, or maybe it's the unrealistic relationship in such a harsh environment that I just don't like.

i get that some westerns the romantic motivation is key, I feel a romantic or sexual subplot seems gratuitous in some. In tombstone I think it was added to give the movie a happy ending with some historical accuracy, just not adultery and suicide type accuracy. He was married 4 or 5 times that we know about and it's very convenient to paint the last one as the love of his life and a satisfying conclusion

I usually revel in listing movies and music examples but my sloppy first post boxed me in here
