Synopsis: Disguised as a human, a cyborg assassin known as a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) travels from 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton). Sent to protect Sarah is Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn), who divulges the coming of Skynet, an artificial intelligence system that will spark a nuclear holocaust. Sarah is targeted because Skynet knows that her unborn son will lead the fight against them. With the virtually unstoppable Terminator in hot pursuit, she and Kyle attempt to escape.

My opinion: The Greatest 80s Film (imo) is The Terminator. It mixes multiple genres together to comprise a perfect film. The only flaw of the film is this scene:

However I will not hold it against the film or Cameron because of the time period and they didn't have the technology to make it more realistic.

It's a perfect film from start to finish.

My rating - 10/10

My only complaint is that some of the visual effects have aged terribly. In comparison, T2’s visuals have fully stood the test of time. I understand there was a lot of evolution in visual effects between the years these movies were made, and T2 had a massive budget, so it’s not really a “fair” comparison. But I can’t just ignore it. Yes, it’s nitpicky, but the movie is so good it’s my criticism of it.

The first one was the best.
The sequels and reboots were nothing but cash grabs.
They all had the same plot.

Terminator Salvation was the only exception of having a unique plot compared to the rest of the films.

Huh. Surprisingly spot on.

Lol sherdog is age restricting me. Funny it was literally on prime like 2 days ago. I felt like watching t1 and t2 today. Realized they moved t1 to YouTube. I was 30 minutes in when I saw you made the thread. Skynet?

Youtube has been stepping their movie game up for sure.

This scene popped up on my YouTube recommendations

So it made me want to make the thread.

Yeah they really have. Tons of great movies on there. That's how I watched Big Trouble in Little China

It was the biggest budget of all time at the time.

What other visual effects were terrible besides the one I listed?

That scene you mentioned and the scene when the endoskeleton is chasing them. The stop-motion is pretty rough at times. Particularly when it’s cut against closeups of the endoskeleton’s face moving that aren’t stop-motion. The jerkiness of it is difficult to miss when those shots are cut back to back.

Like I said, it’s nitpicky and not necessarily “fair.” But it’s the only thing that holds me back from giving it a perfect score.

I mean Jaws can look pretty bad as well for a mechanical robot but it will still make me squirm at the thought of a shark getting me in the water. With all of the remastering movies get over and over you'd think they would fix some of those issues.

Funny I forgot that this did "wrong" before commando.

I'm pretty sure I even saw youtube had the last samurai. Jaws too for a bit

You guys are talking SFX stuff but honestly what always bothered me was how the terminator could mimic voices and had all this targeting future stuff..

But didn't have a facial recognition system to just go and kill her.

Between an 8.5 and a 9.

Great film, fast paced, with great action, Arnie as the villain, a good soundtrack -- still holds up nearly 40 years later.

I loved the first one, part sci-fi part horror, violent, action packed and oh so good. I don’t know what budget Cameron had at the time but for the most part the special effects and stunts were top notch. Now some of the special effects look very bad by today’s standards but given the limitations at the time that’s understandable. Acting, aside from Bill Paxton’s silly role was spot on, Linda Hamilton and michael biehn we’re amazing and Arnold was perfectly cast.

9/10
