Media Rarest/Most Exotic Submissions in the UFC/MMA (gif heavy)

So I was walking the dog the other night and started a list of rare mma submissions and was wondering if anybody wanted to help me expand/correct it

I'm not including standard versions of things like straight armbars, triangles, anaconda/brabos, guillotines, RNCs, arm triangles or heel hooks. I will include some of the preceding subs if they are applied with an interesting setup like a flying armbar...

I don't really have any criteria for submissions to qualify as rare, except for them not appearing on the list above. Not looking at any numbers/stats to help decide what's what...

these can be subs that might have not actually happened yet in mma competition, but are theoretically possible as outcomes in an mma fight, eg no collar chokes or w/e. Also includes some subs that might not still be legal in modern competition.

I'm not a bjj practitioner btw, as some of you might be able to tell. I just find submissions in general to be fascinating. Please correct me where I inevitably get things wrong

here's what I've got so far, with gifs when I can find em↓

Another Neck Crank:

Hey @Flex Plexico: I've got two more for you.

1) The Bas Rutten Neck Crank

2) No idea what to call this thing that Minoru Suzuki tapped Vernon White with. Reverse leg scissors? Leg scissor face crunch?

giphy.gif

Two additional ones I couldn't find pics or gifs of: Masakatsu Funaki once caught Frank Shamrock in a triangle/kimura from guard. He threw up the triangle, Frank had the arm inside tucked beneath Funaki's hips, so Funaki just grabbed it and kimura'd it. Pancrase was great for that type of quick-thinking improvisation.

And speaking of Frank Shamrock, his kneebar on Jeremy Horn is also quite the anomalous submission. He ended up triangling both of Horn's legs and just picking one to extend for the kneebar.
Awesome stuff!!!

That Suzuki leg scissors is pretty nuts! What a career that guy had. Reminds me of Kondo a bit- tons of wins and losses against the cream of the crop.

And pancrase had those boots to grab for leglocks

Gotta get to WiFi; the Rutten gif isn’t loading for me

Gonna try to find footage of the Shamrock/Horn sub- sounds interesting

There’s no way to increase the image limit of posts to more than 20, right?

I’d love to add all these amazing contributions to the OP

Really appreciate those gifs, man. Great stuff

Most brutal submission IMO. Unforgettable.

Have you seen much old school Pancrase? Lots of nasty leg locks in there. Bas breaking Yoshiki Takahashi's shin with an inverted heel hook and ripping apart Guy Mezger's knee with an inverted toe hold and Ken Shamrock making Ryushi Yanagisawa, Leon Dijk, and Bas howl in pain from heel hooks and kneebars immediately spring to mind.

Have people been around here long enough to remember these little clips that Sherdog used to have up back in the day? Before I was ever able to get my hands on bootleg Pancrase DVDs, these clips were my only access to it, and this clip always stuck out. Just a savage finish. Shogun had Randleman dead to rights for a while before he managed to put him away; if you gave Ken even a split second then you were all but guaranteed a trip to the hospital. Hell, even after beating the way past his prime Ken at the TUF 1 finale, Rich Franklin still had to go the hospital and limp for a few weeks courtesy of that heel hook Ken briefly caught him with.

One of the slickest grapplers ever. Josh Barnett, who had nearly a hundred pounds on him, can never say enough about what a wizard he was on the mat.

Yep. Even if you couldn't secure a hold, you could still get traction and torque.

It's just a pic, not a gif. Honestly, I was surprised I was even able to find a picture. And I was absolutely stunned to have found that Suzuki gif. Even though a lot of the early Pancrase stuff is up on Fight Pass, it's still tragically unknown to 99% of the MMA fan base, so I wasn't exactly expecting a treasure trove of gifs.

Nope. If you want, you can at least put all the links in the OP. But if you want to embed the images, then individual posts are going to be capped.

No problem. It's a cool thread. There's some stuff in here that I'd never seen before. The least I could do was toss in a few maybe other people hadn't seen before.

Merry Christmas, Sherdog

and remember- if you’re driving today, and somebody offers you a seventh egg nog,

I love how Imanari stares into the soul of his victim

This is the kind of feedback I’m looking for

So the electric chair wouldn’t ever end a fight like an omoplata eventually would?

Good to know, mang!

An electric chair could end in a submission depending on how flexible the opponent is and their ability to escape the position, but generally it is use as a sweep (the original one you posted did not end in a finish) - an omoplata is tough to get as a sub in MMA but is usually turned into a sweep by the opponent escaping

This one also came to mind, I don't think has been mentioned - a nasty neck crank from Gary Goodrige back in the IVC days

Double underhooks, to like a reverse full nelson from the front, like a crucifix. Against Gary's power it would have been absolutely BRUTAL

Didn't someone pull of a "rape choke" in Pride? If I wasn't at work I would look it up but I don't want to search rape choke at work lol.

Not sure if listed, but the “can opener” is a throwback that requires a good deal of back strength:

**edit, nevermind, someone beat me to it

Goodridge also won one of those fights by squeezing someone’s balls. Cheap stuff, but legal back then.

I feel like that was against Mario Sperry or somebody like that

EDIT: It was (The) Pedro Otavio!

of course
