Sonnen, Maia and Marquardt

In 2009 these 3 were all 1-1 against each other and vying for top contender against Anderson Silva. Now that their careers are almost said and done, how do you rank them in the entirety of their work? And why?

Sonnen beat guys that are considered legends of the sport.. Plus he is still fighting at a decent level. Someone back in 1999 should have told him to train BJJ. He might have won a belt.

One of em actually achieved a world title.

Edit: Nate was the WW Strikeforce champ.

Interesting topic.

Maia - Probably most relevant today. Title shots in two weight classes. Some lack lustre performances, though.

Sonnen - Beat some serious dudes. Still a bit of a stud these days. His wrestling style made him a nightmare match up for a lot of people, but a few solid wrestlers showed that he could be beat - sometimes easily.

Marquardt - The OG of the group... I guess if you're looking at championships/on paper accomplishments, you'd have to go with Nate. Definitely looks the weakest out of the three right now.

If i had to pick:
1. Nate
2. Maia
3. Sonnen

Really, really close though.

All 3 are awesome imo and better than each in different ways

Sonnen has 15 career losses and was finished in 14 of them, thats pretty bad. Hes definitely the worst of the three

Maia
Marquardt
Sonnen

All 3 had great wins but also bad losses, and some nice highlight reels. I’d put Maia on top but I’m biased when it comes to Maia.

marquardt in his prime was the best outta the 3

nate
sonnen
maia

Sonnen probably made/still making more coin then both of them combined, he’s fought in three title fights, has very good wins. It’s debateable who the better fighters were, the MMAth is confusing because Sonnen > Nate > Maia > Sonnen > Nate > Maia

What isn’t debateable is that Sonnens career has been more fruitful

Maia: title shots in 2 weight classes. No suspicion of PED use.

Sonnen: very strong resume. Currently semi finalist in Bellator HW Tourney. Multiple PED busts. Most memorable fight was almost beating Anderson. Gifted title shot at LHW.

Marquart: actually won a title in a legit org. Earned title shot. Also, PED bust.

Sonnen
- Decent record
- Wins over Shogun, Okami, Bisping, Marquandt, Sobral, Rampage and Silva (both old)
- 3 title shots, all lost
- Juicer
- Finished many times

Nate
- Strikeforce champ
- Decent record
- Wins over Palhares, Maia, Lister, Woodley
- The only fighter to finish Maia and Woodley
- Juicer

Maia
- Good record
- 2 title shots after two good runs (not like others)
- Wins over Condit, Masvidal, Chael, Magny, Brown, Fitch
- Only one time finished
- top grappler
- Wasnt caught juicing

Hard to say but:
Maia
Nate
Chael

But very close
