Throwback Randy Couture vs Gabriel Gonzaga retrospect

2007 Randy would beat most of the HWs today without much difficulty.
2007 HW Randy would have the ground game edge on everyone. He was young enough, just old man strength enough, and TRT spinach eating greens enough to put any young whippersnapper who didn't know any better into their fucking place. The ground. What he was able to do, the multiple career resurgences he had, Gina Carano, a film career, and to transition all of that from a fighting background, even trying to take on the big bald red goof himself, is nothing short of amazing. A true fighter, who just when you thought he was out, he came right back in. And then out again. And then right back in it again. That was an awesome time in MMA, seeing someone from the true OG 90s NHB SEG days, tell everyone fuck you and fuck that, and have success at the biggest stages. WAR RANDY COUTURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A REAL AMERICAN HERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE NATURAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1haha

Yeah, if Arlovski, who has been brutally KO'd 12 times, could go on a 6-1 streak when he was well into his 40s, then 2007 Randy could certainly do well in the recent UFC HW division. He aged better than Arlovski with less damage and had a style that worked better for older fighters, too. Taking guys to the ground is less risky than trying to point fight on your feet for 3 rounds.

Easily, easily. He was a beast at HW, and utilized his wrestling to the utmost. 2007 Randy Couture is a mythical version of himself, he was able to create so many peak forms. Dey couldn't handle his riddum. Can't stop the clinch. Can't work, what they don't know.

Plus the recent Gane and Rozenstruik fights show some of these current HW strikers are pretty clueless on the ground. They got away with it until recently cause everyone else wanted to kickbox the entire match as well.

100%, the rest of the HW division besides Jones, has 0 ground game what so ever compared to Randy Couture. Time machined 2007 Randy Couture to this era, and he would be in the top 3 no doubt. Pre-jones, maybe champion. They don't have that wresting pedigree, spinach, or energy exchange with teh Carano to deal.

It’s obvious that Crocop was in decline by the time he got to the ufc , but if you look at how much difficulty Randy had with The Iceman I have to figure that a peak Mirko would probably lay Randy out
In Pride you were allowed to use certain "help"

I just watched this fight yesterday and i can not believe that Randy was a heavyweight champion back in 2007 and the age of 44 with 225 lbs.

Would this Randy beat someone in top 10 today? Maybe Derrick Lewis but i doubt.

Gonzaga looked the part as a fighter, but to me he wasn't ever that good. Now Randy was great, especially when you consider his age and weight disadvantage. I'll forever be a fan of Captain America.

Great fight, I was very excited. Randy stopped Gonzaga with a broken arm. Gonzaga got him a few times though.

Randy would beat the shit out of bummy Derrick Lewis. He'd take him down with ease a feed him knuckle sandwiches until Lewis quits.

This was one of Randy's best wins. Gonzaga was confident and riding a huge wave of momentum after knocking out Cro Cop.

This was similar to when Fedor fought Randleman after Randleman had also knocked out Cro Cop.

Both Randleman and Gonzaga were coming into these fights dangerous and confident. One of Randy's best performances ever no doubt.

I was pretty shocked -- to this day I still don't understand how Gonzaga didn't perform in this fight.

And that's nothing against Randy... I was just like damn Gabe wtf

Makes me wonder how Randy vs Cro Cop would’ve gone.

It’s one of the biggest “What if?” mma points for me. Cro Cop should have been matched up with Randy after the Sanchez fight based on his world ranking and OWGP win. It’s what they did for Anderson and Jake Shields.

Instead, the ufc matched him up here and history was forever changed. Would have loved to see him fight Randy at that point in time.

Great Strategy by Randy. He was able to neutralize Gonzaga's strengths here and had a great strategy. easily one of his most impressive performances.

CAPTAIN AMERICA!!

THAT GUY IS MY HERO

AHAHAHHA good times... prime Joe and Goldie!!!

He also had some bad luckin his fights. -Vitor 2, Chuck eyepoke, Lesnar got him in the temple, Barnett roided to the grills, Ricco too etc.
To me he is the epitome why mma is great. Nothing is certain and normie life rules are to be broken.

To be faaaaaaaaair, he also had some good luck when he broke Gonzaga's nose with a headbutt (unvoluntary, but still, it won him the fights since GG couldn't breath after that and was drowning in his own blood for the rest of the bout) and got some very generous unanimous decisions against Pedro Rizzo and Brandon Vera (could have easily been a draw or a win for Vera)

For what it's worth, all 3 of our venerable Sherdog judges gave the fight to "The Truth"
Randy Couture vs. Brandon Vera
Round 1
Vera lands a quick kick, and flurries on Couture with punches, putting him on his heels. As Vera swims to his neck, Couture gains control in the body clinch up against the fence. Vera using an overhook and wrist control to stop Couture’s takedown advances. Marc Goddard calls for a break at the pair grind to a halt against the cage, but Couture immediately ducks under a Vera punch, and pushes him into the fence again. Couture secures double underhooks, and gets a takedown, but Vera quickly shifts back up the cage. Couture secures a front headlock, and lands two knees to Vera’s head before changing levels in pursuit of another takedown. Couture gets a hold of a single leg, but can’t pull Vera off of the fence and finish the takedown. Couture lands a left hand over the top as he releases the leg. Marc Goddard separates the pair again with 20 seconds to go, but Couture again clinches up immediately.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-10
Brian Knapp scores the round Couture 10-9
Loretta Hunt scores the round Couture 10-9

Round 2
A low kick by Vera lands south of Couture’s belt line, and simultaneously, Couture catches a thumb to the eye. Fortunately, “The Natural” appears unfazed by the inadvertent double foul. Vera switches to southpaw, allowing Couture to rush forward, and push him into the fence again. After a moment with Couture’s back on the fence, Vera is again reverse, with Couture grinding him into the fence, trying to drag him off his back leg and finish the elusive takedown. Marc Goddard breaks the pair up again. Vera lands a jab, and sinks a nice left body kick. A knee to the body from Vera folds Couture in half, sending him reeling across the cage. Vera attacks Couture, forcing him to his back, and into his full guard. Couture clings to Vera off of his back, and Goddard stands them up. The pair trade lazy left overhands. Clinching again, Couture finally starts to dirty box a bit, putting together some right uppercuts and hooks before the round ends.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Vera
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Vera
Loretta Hunt scores the round 10-9 Vera

Round 3
Vera lands an inside low kick on a bobbing Couture. Undaunted, Couture comes forward with a flurry of hooks and uppercuts, punching away as Vera covers up against the fence. Couture now dirty boxing more ably. Vera still showing stalwart takedown defense as he fends off a double-leg takedown. Couture lands a clean left elbow. Couture’s right uppercut and left elbow continue to land and Vera looks to control his wrist in the clinch. Marc Goddard separates the pair once again. Vera lands a pair of crisp body kicks, but Couture is able to get a collar tie in the middle of the cage, and land some uppercuts and knees to the body. Vera initiates the clinch this time, pushing Couture into the fence, and dropping for a double-leg takedown. The crowd beginning to boo the grinding pace of the fight, as Marc Goddard warns the pair for inactivity. Vera hits a beautiful kneetap on Couture, putting “The Natural” on his back and quickly taking mount. Couture overhooks Vera’s left arm, and sweeps him before he can mount any offense. Scrambling back to their feet, the pair trade knees to the body, and grazing hooks before the bell.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Vera
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Vera
Loretta Hunt scores the round 10-9 Vera

All three judges score the bout 29-28 for the winner by unanimous decision, Randy “The Natural” Couture. A crestfallen Brandon Vera exits the cage, and dejectedly sits on the perimeter of the Octagon hanging his head after the decision is announced.

Eww that's a still photo of that kick breaking Randy's arm

Randy peaked in his early-mid 40s which is kind of insane. Demolished peak Sylvia and Gonzaga who was red hot, was giving 300lbs athletic freak Lesnar problems too
