Throwback Randy Couture vs Gabriel Gonzaga retrospect

To be faaaaaaaaair, he also had some good luck when he broke Gonzaga's nose with a headbutt (unvoluntary, but still, it won him the fights since GG couldn't breath after that and was drowning in his own blood for the rest of the bout) and got some very generous unanimous decisions against Pedro Rizzo and Brandon Vera (could have easily been a draw or a win for Vera)

For what it's worth, all 3 of our venerable Sherdog judges gave the fight to "The Truth"

Still beat up and finished Rizzo in the rematch. Gonzaga headbut probably helped but I think the fight was still going that way anyways imo. Vera fight probably robbery tbh but Randy 29-28 all day lol.

If I'm biased towards any fighter it's probably Randy tbh. Only fighter I think I would ever root against him would have been Wanderlei.

Couture had a sneaky way of keeping the top of his skull in Gonzaga’s face. He could teach today’s HW’s a thing or two about athleticism.

The Vera fight was questionable. However, that was one of Randy's last fights when he was around 45-46. If they fought when both guys were the same age, say 35 or 40, then Randy 30-27's Vera all day on all cards.

randy doesn't get near enough respect for winning that fight, it really was the stuff of legend. i remember the discussion here before the fight like it was yesterday, it was basically that the fight maybe shouldn't get sanctioned, that randy was going to get seriously hurt. fucking old man strength for the win.

Gunna watch and score right now ... I dont remember this being such a controversy...but maybe cuz i knew Randy was near the end and wasnt expecting/weighing the fight either way as important

29-28 randy rounds 1-3 he won IMO but first was super close as Randy controlled got takedowns but no damage and Vera caught him with a 3 pc right away and didnt take much damage but old school judging which this fight was would dictate the round for Randy, 3rd was close again but Randy simply out worked him in the third and Vera didnt capitalize on the good body kick

Don't let the numbers fool you.

Randy was a solid, in shape 225.

Most HWs today are bloated 240+.

Look at guys like Boser and Daukaus. They cut to 205 and still look chubby.

Then of course, that wrestling that most HWs today are severely lacking. Prime Randy would be top 10 today for sure.

Edit: Just looked at UFC rankings. I'd give Randy a shot vs anyone from 5 down.

I am sure Gonzaga's own knee broke his nose when Couture slammed him. It was thought to be a headbutt during the live broadcast though.

randy was amazing, but i do think the size of the athletes today would be to much in the end. could he beat fighters in the top 10 with his skills?, of coarse. but the knockouts that await him would be brutal and vicious

CAPTAIN AMERICA!!

THAT GUY IS MY HERO

AHAHAHHA good times... prime Joe and Goldie!!!
100%. Prime Randy Couture, Prime Joe and Goldberg, delivering that official flavor to an epic Saturday night, filled with implications, action, and high stakes rewards. I miss those nights. Back when every card was a fucking banger and had huge fights that moved divisions. WAR CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CAUSE IM BACK'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IM BACK IN THE SADDLE OH YEAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!IM BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To be alive when Randy knocked down Timmeh with that punch.
Randy has had the best resurgences, time and fucking time again. When he went down to LHW after losing decisively to Ricco Rodriguez, and then proceeded to put the whole LHW division on blast, fucking crazy. And then when he said he was going up to HW to do the uthinkable, just damn. I watched that shit live, and that was one of the most fucking awesome moments in UFC history. Old man Randy, going up in fucking weight, and putting down the Mainac and dominating him the whole fight. A true American hero, a fucking badass, and inspiration to all of us now old fucks. Makes me want to get on the TRT ASAP. WAR RANDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE NATURAL BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As time goes on I think Randy gets more underrated people kind of forgot about him. I really miss watching his fights.

probably one of the most underrated 100%. started out in the OG SEG tournament days, winning that, beating then young new comer phenom Vitor Belfort, winning the UFC HW championship twice, defending it against Pedro Rizzo, losing it, going down to LHW, spanking the top dogs around, losing that one, finally going back up to HW for more gold. The dude lived, breathed, and shitted excellence. One of my favorite fighters of all time.
