Oh, I've heard more. I heard he purposely broke Dave Camarillo's nose while training. Had Dave mounted, then for no reason, started punching him in the face. Later on they had some business disagreements and went their own separate ways with Ralph saying something like, "if I ever see you again I'll shoot you."

I can't compare the two academies.
I was about to join Ralph Gracie's academy in Mountain View but I decided to move to San Mateo. While in Mateo I came accross one of Charles Gracie's academies.
I tried it out and loved it.
So I signed up for it and this has been my first week there.

It's all Gi though.
The guys there are very easy to get along with and have no problem teaching you a few techniques.
Chris the site instructor has reminded me a couple of times to take it easy though (while his assistant trainers tell me that I'm going too easy).
Other than that, I really like it there.
But I have no prior BJJ training so I can't say much in regards to comparison.
