ralph gracie sf = grr. argh. bleh.

i believe there was a one-time membership fee built into that as well, but i can't remember exactly how much. 30 or 40 i think. i didn't keep the receipt. i recall thinking the per-class rate was fair or at least common. the drop-in rate for a single class was 30.

alrighty, off to 10th planet. wish me luck!

Don't let anyone suck you in into buying multi-pass package.

Just pay for the single class and that is it.

My teamate who travels and trains in 5 differents cities told me that some clubs are just not user friendly for him because he travels so much.

Just pay one time and see what it is like first.

who did you speak to when you actually bought the classes?
we dont have a "pack of classes" as far as i know, 180 seems like a month of classes at unlimited attendance. If you bought them from the funding company "EFC" well that was the problem im sure. they've defrauded my account twice and have been shady ever since i started martial arts at a different school in highschool 13 years ago. Kurts hands might be tied on this one but id definitely go at 5pm before class and talk to him while hes not in the middle of rolling. That kinda of paints an unfair image btw. But it is your bad for not keeping the receipt, we get new people in there everyday how is he going to remember someone who comes a few times a year? Id think that would be common sense for any situation like this.
Also what you saw was the 5pm class rolling. No one ever comes to the 7 oclock classes, but even if one person does they stay for them and teach the class.

Sorry about everyone's problem with the vibe, when i started there i got it from maybe 2-3 people, fades fast and you'll see that its like a family we roll on Christmas eve, shoot paintballs at each other (at a range). Like i said we get new people everyday some dont come back, most usually stay at least a few months if not permanently. BUt even then we get people who i only see thereonce every few months, they always seem to get a warm welcome back.
Ive rolled with every purple belt there and they've all been nice and very helpful letting me know what i was doing wrong, so im sorry you got choked out man, that sucks. Its a serious school besides all the broooos and doooods.

Actually after reading you post over again you said some shitty stuff. "retarded surfer inflection" wow nice one, kinda undeserving dont you think.

I've never been able to train at Ralph's but I have heard a lot of the same stories from people that I know who have trained there. From everything I've heard it's just a really aggressive school. Guess you gotta go in there ready to be aggressive as well.

Kurt's way cool! I can tell you this, Ralph's SF school is definitely a love it or hate it type of school. If you're serious about training and train hard you'll love it. If you're not as competitive and want a laid back, nice guy, gym...you're better going to another gym. Personally I loved it there.

They defrauded him, he has a right to mock them. And I've heard a similar story about Ralph's. The dude I talked with saw Ralph rolling with another higher belt and Ralph got the mount, declared "What if this was MMA?" and clocked the guy in the face. I think the OP is better off going to one of the many other Cali options.

Honestly, how bad could this dude be? :D

no actually Kurt didnt defraud him im sure their exchange was mis-communicated. and if its EFC that defrauded him then he shouldn't be calling Kurts inflection retarded. esp then saying that he was nice and decent. Dude just sounds like an angry gay man that didnt get his way.

a lot of our students do MMA, Scyman is right about it, its a serious school.

this guy Omally is catching feelings about being "forced to yell across the gym" so its true its not the place for him. if you dont sound off when doing our warm up then you can drop and do 20. we get loud we train hard. We learn respect and how to carry ourselves. we are learning how to fight and or defend ourselves arnt we? some people sound pretty pathetic saying they dont feel safe at a place where you learn to fight. talk all the stories you want about Ralph all youre doing is gossiping. stay pathetic.

i first thought that ralph got signed to strikeforce.

as to the topic, sucks for you, but u should have gone in while injured and talked it out then, not after. didn't ur teacher's teach you that with late assignments? "see me before it's due not after". anyway, i've heard ralph is rough and all, but part of me wants to slap ppl who can't escape, so i'm not entirely shocked one teacher out of thousands actually does it.
his "leave me and i'll hurt you" thing is what bugs me. i'm loyal to renzo academy because i've been given so much and asked for so little (next to money :)), they don't force ppl to stay, ppl choose to.

damn, you kind of got screwed.
check around there are lots of schools in the bay area. lots of places will let you drop in for free. there's no reason to sign up at one school until you see them all.

and watch out, i got my arm popped a couple times visiting new academies, but that's part of the game.

First off let me say I have never trained at Ralph's school, and though I have heard rumors from people, I leave them as just rumors. Secondly, on to the topic not at hand.

TO Apathy,

While the TS didn't need to use the language he did when talking about your instructor, and I understand wanting to defend one's school and family I don't think you are representing your school very well by inferring about another person's sexuality and calling everyone pathetic either. You just said you learn about respect in your post, but then throw insults out to strangers. Posting about your experience was fine, and gives people into the insight of how the club is, but insults even to those that offend us doesn't get anyone anywhere.

As for the schools in SF, it sounds like we got a sherdogger that can go around and give us some reviews of the different schools that has no affiliation with anyone out there, so as someone who wants to travel and train I can't wait to here what you think of the other schools...if it isn't too expensive and you are going out there for a month, spend a week at 4 different schools and let us know what you think.

That is not exactly the story.

I think he was only a brown belt and told Ralph that he had enough and wanted to leave him. Ralph called him and another brasilian BB in his office and told him that he will hurt him if he ever leaves him.
At the time, David admit he was not mentally prepared to leave Ralph and it took him a few years to seperate himself.
David also explained on how Ralph used to beat him up for no reasons!
Ralph Gracie takes his creonte business really seriously!

There were a lot of straws that brokefirst. I thought I was being pretty clear that I was oversimplifying the story and to read the book.

I agree!

If he's injured why should he go in and explain that to the instructor if he was under the impression that the training sessions didn't expire? That doesn't make any sense.

didn't ur teacher's teach you that with late assignments? "see me before it's due not after".

Again, not making sense.

anyway, i've heard ralph is rough and all, but part of me wants to slap ppl who can't escape, so i'm not entirely shocked one teacher out of thousands actually does it.

And this brings me to the reason I'm responding to your post. I've read A LOT of ridiculous, and douchey things on the interweb this past week, but the above takes the cake.

How would you like it if some of the upper belts in your academy decided to haze you by getting dominant positions and slapping you?!? Assuming they are worth their rank, and you couldn't escape, I'm certain you'd be rethinking that ridiculous statement you just made.

If you want to hit people from dominant positions, go do MMA, otherwise take that bullshit ego out of the academy because it does more harm to your training partners than good.

if your student can't escape than it's the fault of the instructor.

wow, well if you're done spraying the forum with Eau de Ralph i'll respond to a couple points and then let you get back to it.

a) i never said i was "defrauded" by anybody. kurt sold me the lesson pack the first time i came in. it was a one time payment by credit card. no matter what you call it, the breakdown is the same: i paid for training, called and emailed about my injury, never heard a peep in response, and wasn't allowed to come back without "purchasing more classes" (those were his exact words, which leads me to believe it was indeed a "lesson pack").
b) this is not a case of being mad he didn't remember me. and for real, taxes aside who keeps receipts for 6 months? if that were the issue i'd have been more than happy to come back with a copy of my credit card statement.
c) yes, kurt was basically nice if not a little awkward to interact with. in other words, he wasn't confrontational or rude. however i found the overall experience unprofessional and, frankly, stingy.
d) i like to train hard. i like sounding off and all that traditional work-your-ass-off-keep-the-energy-high stuff. this isn't a sport ANYBODY gets into for casual friendly workouts. but there needs to be balance. open and approachable when we're chatting or drilling, all business when we're rolling. that's what i look for. and as a new potential student, i'd prefer not to shout my questions across the gym. but hey, maybe that's just me.
e) if i sound like an angry gay man who didn't get his way it's because, well, yeah. i guess i am. i'm peeved (!) and i'm gay (?!) and no, i didn't get what i wanted, which was the training i paid for ( =P ). none of which makes you sound like any less of an angry hetero who got his feelings hurt by an email. get a grip mary. sheesh.

ok, have at it. you'll get no further argument or resistance from me.

if you are looking for a place to train with the gi, you should stop by barra brothers bjj in sf. The teacher is great (carlos sapao), and all the students are friendly. pm me if you would like more info about the school. good luck at 10th planet

Well the guy is self affirmed gay man, and there's no offense to be taken there i know and work with a few gay guys and when they throw a fit that's how they act a little off balance and crude. And sorry but i stand by what i said and i did NOT say everyone was pathetic just those who have the misconstrued ideal of being safe when learning how to fight and then in the same sentence bashing my school, secondly those who spread rumors and gossip about things they've heard from god knows where. its misinformation. How are you going to accuse me of throwing insults at strangers when gossiping like certain members in this thread have done does far worse harm? My saying that i think that shit is pathetic is my opinion, im not going around saying you blow goats which would be gossip and far more harmful whether or not it is in fact true. Point in case everyone reading this probably thinks that Ralph teaches (or even beats down) at the school right? Well hes only really there on special occasions. Kurt is the main instructor and everyone says he cool even the ts in some disarranged way. So all the negative talk on Ralph doesnt really hold any weight (even if it where true) and just deters people from and actual representation of the school.

Also we learn that respect is earned; neither of the aforementioned warrant any kind of respect. if you disagree turn the tables and think about it.

dude, gossiping is talking about unconfirmed rumors that you hear and no one refuses to stand by. Dave camalrillo's story is not only in print(meaning he is willing to stand by it publicly and take legal responsibity for his words), it has been confirmed by others in interviews.

The dude didn't say he's gay, your school cheated him, and if you're a representative of Ralph's school then clearly the stories are true and you're a bunch of douchebags. Keep digging that hole, it's nice to see the stories that I've heard firsthand get reinforced.

Still like i said ive never heard of a lesson pack like i was telling the other person i think there was mis-communication between both of you.

the reason why youd keep the receipt is not for taxes but because it is not something in which you'd be in regular attendance, what if you came in on a day when Kurt was sick? it just seems to me like that would be your ticket of sorts since youd be dropping in a few times out of the year.

you didnt need to spout off any questions across the school at all just say, im here for class or i have a question. seriously.

nefti,
there are a lot more rumors and gossip then being posted that has nothing to do with Dave.

Ashton,
actually he did.
