British astronomer and broadcaster Sir Patrick Moore has died, aged 89, his friends and colleagues have said.

He "passed away peacefully at 12:25 this afternoon" at his home in Selsey, West Sussex, they said in a statement.

Sir Patrick presented the BBC programme The Sky At Night for over 50 years, making him the longest-running host of the same television show ever.

He wrote dozens of books on astronomy and his research was used by the US and the Russians in their space programmes.

Oh man. He was one of those guys you figure would live forever.

R.I.P, Big Pat

Sir Patrick Moore lied about his age and joined the RAF at age 16. He served as a Navigator in Bomber Command during the Second World War. He fell in love with a nurse, who was killed when a German bomb struck her ambulance.

Moore never married, stating that he had been in love and there was no point accepting, "second best" with anyone else.

He was related to Alan Moore, the writer of Watchmen and V for Vendetta.

RIP.

What's the point of knighting people now? Do they get a sword and a piece of land?

He was an institution in his field.
Always interesting to watch, harder to hear sometimes.

RIP Sir Patrick

Ever so sad but good grief I wouldn't have been surprised if this happened decades ago.

If we hadn't had Sir Patrick we may not have had Professor Brian Cox, that would have been a tragedy.

Sounds like she broke his heart and he couldn't live knowing she would be with someone else. Here is his recorded transcript the day his love died.

"This is Navigator of Bomber Command, Lattitude 45.2 Longitude 25.3. Give 'em Hell, that stupid bitch."
"Isn't that our Medic field?"
"It's been taken over by those Goosesteppers now...."
"Bombs away, thank you Navigator."
"No, thank you!"

So I believe his statement on 'second best'. Love makes you do crazy things.

Damn that's sad.

I'm dreading the day Attenborough kicks it.

True, 9 times outta 10 I couldnt understand a thing he said, listening to him is like trying to decode the matrix, you pick out words like 'Moon, Stars, Night' but thats about it.
