Q&A on Thailand

please dont talk about khao san road, makes my blood boil.

i dont like the backpacking hippys that invade that street.
they are animals,
the atmosphere in that street sickens me to the core.

I imagine that the hippies in Thailand are the same ones we get around north coast NSW:
dirty, drugged-out scum.

hippies are hippies no matter where you put em.
they exit there 2 dollar rooms in the evening searching for 1 dollar meals and drinks, the tighter the spending the longer they can extend there holiday and infest my country.
getting drunker as the night goes on they get louder and louder,
finally when they can no longer handle there drinks they became disrespectful to the locals, wind up getting stabbed, and claim thai people have no self control.
to all the respectful tourists,welcome.

You find it so Payak? I find many of the back packers are either couples or group of girls.

Oh Payak, there is one question you are more apt to answer. If you cause some thai to lose face, what do you 'need' to do to resolve all animisity? apology or a make up gift?

Along these lines, I am also wondering if there are any specific things we should do to show proper manners and politeness to native Thai people. I'm sure there must be a few common cultural mistakes Americans make all the time (aside from the hippies, of course LOL).

I might be staying there a while while im in BKK. Not a hippy but I like cheap rooms and acomm and seems to be a fairly lively area.

Might spend half time there and half time at Suk.

Nice generalization, douchebag.

Most hippies are pretty peaceable, though they may be grubby budget hunters. It's the lagerheads and fratboys inspired by DiCarprio's Beach movie that cause most of the trouble, and I get the impression you've only been to Khao San Road once, otherwise you'd know what you're talking about.

look at the bottom of my post ghostwhipe,
all respectful tourists welcome, that means all those that are not acting up, therefore i am not generalizing am i.

if someone loses face they never forget, can forgive but never forget.
if you cause someone to lose face, dont push it further, just walk.

im not getting involved in the name calling, but look at the begining of your post. hippies are hippies. so you were generalizing.

ok,so it it appears i was generalizing, maybe i should write everything in extreme detail.
i just hope i didnt hurt your sensitive little feelings, are you guys gonna be ok, would you like a tissue or something.
well behaved tourists fine, bad tourists, not fine.
but it is true,i do hate hippies,so what.

Don't touch a Thai on the head.

Don't use your feet to point at things, and don't show the soles of your feet to people (that means don't sit with your feet propped up in front of you).

I have been doing some research for my first trip to Thailand later this fall, and read that insulting or disrespectful comments about Royalty are also at the top of the list when it comes to things not to do.

For Westerners who seem to step on a rolling coin to stop it when it falls, I believe this would be something to avoid as coins have the King's image on there, and you would be stepping on it with the bottom of your shoe. I also heard that you should avoid keeping paper money in your back pants pocket, because you would be sitting on a picture of the King. I'm not sure if the money tips I have mentioned are true, but I think I will avoid doing those things, just in case.

Tellin' it like it is.

If you can afford 150$ USD pr. night then Sheraton at Asok is cool. Or Grand Hyatt Erawan across the street.

Book your hotel from Asiarooms for discounts.

Its like this in Bangkok:

<1000 baht - Shithole in tourist districts or decent low budget outside.

1500-2000 baht - Mid range, decent but not much better than low range.

2500 baht and up - High end, very good value for money.

150$ a night is just plain dumb for any country in SE Asia (maybe except for Japan)

There are many hotels that range from 700 baht - 1000 baht that are out of the "tourist areas".

disrespecting the king will get you a long prison sentence,as will defacing money with the kings image.
thai people are quite forgiving of farangs mistakes as we no they dont quite fully understand our customs.
dont worry to much.
once i was sitting with several thai trainers and champions, we had several farang students with us drinking hard.
i politely asked one to put his foot down as it was pointing directly at one of the trainers,he laughed and said they dont mind they know me,rose from his chair and pulled the trainers head down and farted in his face.
i could not believe what i was seeing, shortly after he took the mother of all beatings from the trainer.

The rules about bringing supplements in have gotten tighter recently. I've heard of people having to forfeit their supps at the airport. Steppingrazor, if you're going to TMT, ask them. They'll know what the current rules are.

I used to bring loads of sups to Thailand and had to problem at all. Never been searched either.
